22 Monday, Feb? 10, 1975 TELEVIEWS Clarence Metcalfe Ottawa Journal New TV series lack originality, punch Originality continues to be the most glaringly obvious lack in television programming on this continent, at least I had a look at three of the new shows import-. ed from the United States by Canadian networks the Life and limes of Barney Miller, an ABC series being shown on an Independent basis by CBC stations; a CBS-TV series and" Hot I Baltimore, another ABC feature, picked up by Global in Canada. Of the three, Barney Miller is somewhat different in character but not original. Khan reaches back to the days of Charlie Chan, leaning strongly on the premise of Oriental to give it a gimmick and some shock appeal. Hot 1 Baltimore is somewhat like last year's Lotsa with assorted unlikely characters under one roof, and most of the roles overplayed like crazy.

Some virtues? Yes. I mink there's a bit of good fun in mat cluttered police headquarters occupied by Barney Miller and his whole bungling crew, even if it is portrayed by a cast that seems as unprofessional as a once-a-year company of amateurs that per-forms in a church basement. 4,. Jnan is apparently supposed to oe a very cooi, au-Knuwuig private eye who is not at all fooled by the devious workings of the inscrutable Oriental mind. At that, point the old Charlie Chan fans become disappointed, because Khan seems to depend on his wits without Charlie Chan's corny philosophizing.

Also, Khan's son only seems to, do menial and routine' things, and doesn't share in detective duties as Charlie's "Number One son." Khan fares quite well by his own cleverness thank you. His daughter does help in setting, up plots, however. I think Khan will soon become deadly dull. I know it won't make you feel any 'better to learn this, but Knlgh Dheigh, the star of Khan, is really more black than he is Oriental and his real name is Ken I keep wondering what the intended debut show was really like, because five hours before it was to go on the air, CBS-TV officials make a quick switch and substituted another episode of the series as the starter. They claimed it was a stronger -leadoff episode to gain viewer attention.

It may have been the scary appearance of that masked Oriental killer with his long menacing sword that was consid ered more appropriate to send some thrills and chills into the viewer. To the younger viewers, this may have been a successful gimmick but the older viewers I'm sure, will not be too i4ieiMw.iiitA tt 4.atr mica mA racf ftf tha CAriAO. eoiwiflllv since the network bosses have admitted at least one other episode is weaker, -i The bad aspect of the show is when new characters are introduced, the script writers have gone overboard in emphasizing their future roles in the series. A few of the cast members are going to live up to the overblown billrngsuMirostwill not The reason why the show is being frowned on in Bal timore, i muiK, is Because 01 ids presence 01 pruauiuics iu uic seedy old hoteL. And the suggestion that there are 6r is even one such seedy hotel, is not a rose in the lapel of the chamber of commerce president.

Jennings to Washington Peter Jennings, former CJOH and CTV television personality who has-since become an award-winning TV news commentator in the United States, has been recalled from the Beirut news bureau which be set up for ABC in 1971, to become Washington co-host of a new early morning news and public affairs program, AM America. The program, which is somewhat similar to CTV's Canada AM feature, also begins at the same crack-of-dawn hour: 7 a.m. ABC obviously considers Jennings pretty valuable property and the president, William Sheehan, had1 the following to say about him: "Peter is a journalist of great expertise, having covered many of the top news stories of the past decade, both foreign and domestic. We are especially pleased that he has accepted this new assignment because he has the enthusiasm and the experience to become a vital new journalistic force in Washington." Madame ambassador Following in the tradition of movie actor Ronald Regan who became governor of California, and actress Grace Kelly, who became Princess Grace of Monaco, former child actress Shirley Temple Black is now performing her official duties as United States ambassador to Ghana. She was seen as prim and proper Madame Ambassador on the CBS news and public affairs program 60 Minutes Sunday at 6 p.m.

The program showed her arrival to take up her official duties in Ghana in a segment of the news show. Mrs. Black was standing under a canopy at the end of a red carpet acknowledging a military salute. It also showed her meeting President Gerald Ford and State Secretary Kissinger and presenting her credentials to Ghana's. head of state.

Then for the old-timers in the viewing audience, there were clips of the young singing and dancing Shirley Temple from the movies The Littlest Rebel and Little Miss Marker. by JO OUELLET HOW TO PLAY: AH tha words listed below appear in the puzzle horizontally, rtlcally, diagonally, even backwards. 'But why, when Spy stories are selling so well and there is a rich field of material combining history and espionage in the days be-' fore the War of 1812.

Gov. Craig of Canada engaged an American, John Henry, to carry out espionage and intrigue in the New England states. He reported that the New Englanders were opposed to another war with Britain and certainly did not want to attack the Man times. gave. him permission to intimate to leading New Englanders that he was1 ready to.

open secret negotiations with them- perhaps leading to cessation from the U.S, (Flashback on Canada) Henry completed his work and then tried unsuccessfully to get a job with the British i.v i 1 service. He was so angry that he gave copies of his correspondence to state department and was given $50,000 on Feb. 10, 1812. The reports were read to Congress and this gave the "war' hawks" an opportunity to press for a declaration of war against Britain, with the objective of capturing Cana-da. Leaders of the French Revolution also stirred up trouble hoping that Canada would break away from Britain.

They sent "Citizen" Genet to the U.S. which he used as a base to get agents and propa- ganda into One docu-. ment circulated in Canada was called "The Free French to their Brothers in Canada" and urged in part "Break -with a government that grows worse from day to day and has become the most cruel enemy of thai liberty of the peoples." Fortunately Canadians knew the gory story of the revolution in France and were not interested in co- -operating with its leaders. George- Washington also be- came fed-up with Genet's ar- rogance and had him recalled to France. In our 12-year-old house we have hardwood floors which creak quite loudly.

We've tried carpeting on top to muffle the noise but it hasn't helped. Any suggestions? Floor squeaks are caused from wood joints moving against each other or against loosened nails. An NRC building re-" search adviser says the difficulty is determining trie exact lo- cation of fault which could be between suMoor and joist, hardwood floor and subfhor, or between the tongue and groove of the hardwood floor. Remedies that you might consider are to lubricate tongue and groove by mopping the floor, using hot Water and plenty of soap (not detergent) or introduce liquid wax or mineral oil between the adjacent boards. However, the oil may discolor the floor slightly.

Accessible basement joists can be re-toe nailed to the subfloor. A more difficult solution is to blind nail the This is done by nailing between the floor joints through the tongue into the sub-floor and setting the nail bebw the surface. Where appearance is not important, an effective procedure is to drive a nail through the face of the flooring into the sublloor. How are eggs graded Into different categories? Is It by weight or size? Eggs are graded on weight, cleanliness and soundness in the shape of the shell, the shape and relative position of the yolk within the egg, the size of the air cell, and the presence of blood and meat spots. Grade A-l extra large must be at least 2V ounces per egg; A-l large at least 2 ounces; A-l medium at least 1 but less man 2 ounces; A-l small at least lVt but less man 1 ounces.

Any egg less than lVi ounces is pee wee grade. In stores you sometimes might find grade eggs which must be at least 1 ounces. Further information may be obtained from Agriculture Canada's food advisory service. Who decides what streets in Ottawa will be named? City officials sdy that naming of new streets in Ottawa or region must be cleared by the regional planning offices so there is no duplication of names. Only dedicated city streets are named.

I understand that National Research Council developed a vertical access wind generator for harnessing the wind to make electrical energy. Its. cost was supposedly only one-fifth to one-seventh of that of a conventional windmill. Are there machines of this kind now in production and if so, what do they cost? NRC aerodynamics advlier says a limited number of prototypes of a special purpose vertical axis wind turbine are being produced by a Toronto company, Dominion Aluminum Fabricating Ltd. These prototypes will be installed at various sites across the country where they will be exposed to a wide range of operating conditions.

The -experience gained by operating the machines under these varied conditions will enable the company to design a general purpose wind turbine.
