Nadine sings in the high-school choir and takes piano lessons and Stephen is trying out for his junior high-school orchestra, still undecided about what instrument he wants to play. such trials of childhood as feeling left behind, swallowing a tooth, forgetting what they were going to say or putting their shoes on backwards will un- doubtedly be tickled by Growing Up. The hour-long film starring the Offenheim family is a blend of music, kid-, stuff and brilliant anima- tion that poignantly touches on the sometimes-forgotten aspects of growing up. It's something kids can understand and enjoy, but only adults can really fully appreciate. Sandy Offenheim talks about lads in all her songs, without missing a thing.

Growing Up, written specifically for her and her sing ideal tor children songs; Stephen, a polished speaking voice, and Harold, a friendly "Daddy-like" quality that guarantees instant rapport with youngsters. But Sandy, with what she modestly calls her "OK voice," is undeniably the foundation of the group. The Offenheims' success started when Stephen's kindergarten teacher heard Sandy's songs and convinced her to try publishing a songbook. When Sandy first appeared at BerandoP Music publisher Ralph Cruickshank hesitated but not for long. "As soon as I heard songs, be recalls.

Soon after If Snowflakes Fell in Flavours was published, piles of letters started flowing into Berandol people wanted a record. The children's record market was almost nonexistent at the time, says Cruickshank. Not only did the album If Snowflakes Fell in Flavours match sales of already-popular children's records, it surpassed them by leaps and bounds. Now, almost three years later, the family is at work on their fourth album. Each one in the catalogue reflects a different side of the Offenheims.

"Snowflakes is the cutesy album, Honey on Toast is much more serious and Are We There Yet? is absolutely wacko," Sandy says. Then came Growing Up, a film that combines the best of the cutesy, serious and wacko sides of the Offenheims. Both entertaining and educational, it will be available to various boards of education and libraries. CBC plans to air the film as soon as the producers. Playing With Time find a prime-time sponsor.

Despite the lengthy list sparks childhood memories that flow back in a rush to the viewer. It's the world of children, best summed up by the boy who explains earnestly to his little sister with the loose tooth; "We have to pull it out or itll grow backwards into your brain and youH die." For Sandy, who first put words to music eight years ago, song-writing evolved from conversations she had with her children. "The first songs I wrote What Is Your Name, Zig-Zag and It's So Nice to Have a Cuddle started as conversations," she says. "1 never realized they circulated in Canada by the Goethe Institute, Toronto. Barlach, who is known both for his sculpture and his graphic art, spent most of his life in Germany.

Although he studied in Paris and Florence, his artistic identity was confirmed on a trip to Russia in 1906. The sombre mood and vast expanses of this northern landscape decisively influenced his personality and his art. Now, two song-books, three albums, one film and countless concerts later, the family non-professional entertainers captivates their audiences perhaps to a greater extent than could many professionals. "We're not out there to be pros because the idea behind us is that we are a norma), happy family people can relate to," says Harold. "We really enjoy ourselves without trying to be big stars." The Offenheims really don't have to try they're-loaded with star qualities.
