Wed, Oct. 8, 1980 'Big Daddy' fathers drag racing museum Autumn Gold Mitchell has work cut out on ice C6 THE CALGARY HERALD sOj runs, or a total of 200, down the quarter-mile strip before he has to start using a new one he built this summer. Td like to have them all back," he said, somewhat dejectedly. "I sold one in Australia when I was racing there, one is on a show circuit in Europe, one is in the Harris Museum in Reno, and another is in the Florida Sports Hall of Fame in Cyprus Gardens." Garlits got the idea to start his personal accumulation of automobiles when he visited Lord Montague's auto museum in England in 1976. His collection, however, does not only include dragsters.

He also has numerous other antique cars, magazines and artifacts. Other racers have also donated cars to the museum. "It's the only museum in the world that features drag racing cars," Garlits pointed out. "But I didn't want it to be just a racing museum. For example, I have a Cadillac Eldorado with zero mileage' in there.

"My wife says it's the world's largest ego trip. But, I think it's helpful to my business. Anytime I get down in the dumps, I just go look around and see the progression I've made over the years." ByDarylSladt (HeraM staff writer) The top fuel dragster that Don "Big Daddy. Garlits was driving when he beat Terry Capp in a best-of-three match race, during the recent Fall Fox Hunt at Calgary International Raceway, will soon end up in a museum. Garlits, 48, probably the most renowned drag racing driver in North America will make certain of that.

He constructed his own museum in his hometown of Seffner, near Tampa four years ago. "A lot of guys have accomplished a lot in their careers, but don't keep said Garlits. "It's all gone and it's a part of their life. All they have left are a couple of cups (trophies). "I'm just lucky I have enough money to do this.

I must have put a quarter-million dolors into it, but I wouldn't take a million dollars if some philanthropist offered it to me for my collection." i Garlits has competed for 30 years and is currently using his 26th dragster. He has 15 of them in his museum and) of the six he has crashed, he will be able to restore a couple eventually. The type of car he is currently driving is good for about 25 more Ironically, the Mitchell rink has competed unsuccessfully in each of the two previous Classics, finishing second in 1978 and failing to qualify for the finals last year. Other prominent rinks entered this year include five-time Dominion champion Joyce McKee from Saskatoon, 1979 Autumn Gold runner-up Susan Seitz of Calgary and 1980 Alberta junior champion Jackie Rae Anderson of St. Albert.

Thirteen Calgary rinks are entered, along with representatives from B.C., Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The lone eastern Canadian representative will be a rink from Frederiction, N.B., skipped by Grace Donald. Last year's champion rink, skipped by Crystal Brunas of Gray, was forced to drop out when the Brunas' house was destroyed by fire in late September. Roland said no changes have been made in the event format. Opening draw will be at 2:30 p.m.

Friday with the second draw to follow at 5:30 p.m. Play continues Saturday and Sunday, with eight rinks eventually qualifying for the final draw and top prize of $4,500. Total prize money this year is $14,000 and each of final eight rinks is guaranteed at least $750. By Lloyd McLachlan Herald staff writer) It says something about a bon-spiel when a world champion whoU be competing isn't even considered a favorite. But that suits organizers of the third-annual Autumn Gold Classic billed as the richest cash 'spiel for women in Canada just fine.

Defending women's world champion Marj Mitchell of Regina heads the list of 32 entries which will take part in the four-day invitational event, which opens Friday afternoon and continues until Monday at the Calgary Curling Club. But if anything, the status of Mitchell's rink as the best in the world may be a liability. "Everybody wants to beat the champ," Mavis Roland, a member of a local committee which organizes the annual event, explained during a press conference Tuesday. "You can't pick any favorites," she said. "The competition is high- calibre.

They're all good teams and any one is capable of winning." Balanced competition is a key factor in any major event and organizers feel this year's Classic features some of the best women's rinks in Canada. The Mitchell foursome remains intact featuring the same lineup which captured the 1980 world title at Perth, Scotland in March. In addition to the skip, Nancy Kerr (third), Shirley McKendry (second) and Wendy Leach (lead) will make the trip west. Lions' Ford out for season VANCOUVER (CP) Defensive back Devon Ford, one of the most dangerous kick return men in the Canadian Football League, has been lost to B.C. (Herald staff writer) The Indian Summer men's bonspiel has fallen victim to the Indian summer weather. The unusually warm weather has taken its toll with the ice at the Big Four curling club and the 24 sheets on the second floor are out of service. "The ice on the top floor has gone to pieces," moaned Gordon-Hutton, one of the organizers of the 120-rink bonspiel on Tuesday, "but the bonspiel will go ahead. Well use the 24 sheets downstairs and add an extra draw." But, according to longtime drawmaster Keith the problems extend beyond the ice.

"I've never seen anything like it in my life," said Stackhouse during Tuesday's opening round. "I'm not sure they'll even finish this bonspiel." "Half the rinks aren't even here and we've got rental curlers coming in and saying they've received letters to curl here this week. I don't know what we're going to do." During opening-day action, Glenn Moss and his Calgary Curling Club four some played to perfection at least in one end.
