THE SCRAfTOH" REPUBLICAN, MONDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 11, 1889. DAVISOM CASTLES SKIPS. A GREEN RIDGE GROCERTMAN LEAVES FOR PARTS UNKNOWN. HE'S NOW ON THE OCEAN WAVE. Fifteen Hondre Dollars Disappear with.

Him and a Wife and Four Children Are Left to Struggle with the World Many Unpaid Bills. Last Wednesday night Davison Castles took the late train on the L. Vf. R. B.

for New York, ostensibly for the purpose of transacting business in connection with the grocery store at the corner of East Market street, and Sanderson avenue, Green Ridge. Thursday morning, on opening the store, the clerk discovered a note on the desk over a number of bills addressed to Mrs. Castles requesting her to enter the bills in the book as she found them. The clerk reported to Mrs. Castles what he had found and she repaired to the office and made the further discovery that Castles' papers and judgment notes, gold pen and other small articles belonging to him were all gone.

Opening the private money drawer in the safe, it was found to be empty. The collections of the ooncern since the first of the month were about one thousand dollars and no bills had been paid as yet, but the money was gone. Mrs. Castles' suspicions were fully aroused and after turther investigation she became convinced that her husband had decamped, leaving her to struggle with the world. It seems that he had been doing business under the name of D.

Castles, Agt, and the principal for whom he was agent is supposed to have been Alex. Holmes, who has been engaged in the store as clerk. When Holmes was apprised of what had taken aue he felt aggrieved at the position in which he had been placed, and in order to protect Mrs. Castles, who had claims for labor, he confessed judgment to her for the amount of ner claim, and proposes to allow the creditors to take the balance. On Saturday a judgment note was entered by Messrs.

Dale lor eight hundred dollars, signed by Davison Castles, agent. Yesterday morning Attorney 1. Woodruff left a note for Mrs. Castles which, upon being opened. was found to be from Castles, having been written before his departure.

Then it was known positively that Castles had skipped." He gave no intimation as to his destination but simply stated that he, at the time of reading, would be "on the ocean wave," and bade farewell to his wife in a cold, heartless way, admonishing her to care for the children, of which there are four. Mrs. Castles hus the svmnathv of the peo ple in the vicinity of the storo who have rec ognized in her an honest, hard working, in dustrious woman. Just what steps she win take in the matter has not vet been decided, but she says that she will consult an attorney to dav. Castles was a member of the firm of Castles limes on Lackawanna avenue, which failed a little over a year ago.

Last May he started at Green Ridge as agent for Alex. Holmes and it was thought by business men in town that he had a good opportunity to succeed, but carelessness in his business dealings and hi9 fondness for the "cup that ehoers" have been the cause of his downfall. The liabilities of the ooncern will amount to about four thousand dollars and the assets will not reach a thousand. It is supposed that Castles haB taken anywhere between a thousand and fifteen hundred dollars with him. It will be remembered that Mr.

Castles re cently had Captain of Providence, arrested on a charge of criminal libel for inserting in a note to W. Gaylord Thomas, a clause statiuc that "Castles had secured a judgment against him by perjuring himself." It is evident that this libel suit will never come to trial. Castles wits a' well knoivbnaB irboat towtf," and was a member of several secret societies. His most striking feature was a piratical brown moustuche, which always drew a second Klauce. Ho was pugilistic by nature, and while in business on Lackawanua a venue created many scenes of excitement by hustling from his store persons who used language that he found objectionable.

On one occasion Mr. Castles was arrested in a Lackawanna avenue clothing store for creating a disturbance there. He was present when a party was making a purchase, aud remarked that "ho ought to get a sticking piaster to hold the vest to his This was the signal for a free fight iu which Castles came off first best. Officer Notz was called in and Castles was marched off. At the station house door he broke away from Notz and ran so fast that he escaped.

Later, he was re arrested and held in bail. Tho case was settled before it came to a trial. CONTESTED ELECTION CASES. How the Respondents Figure Out a Victory Rule on the Examiners. Argument in the contested election cases will be made in court before a full bench ou Friday next.

The respondents have dis. covered that there Is hope for them provid ing that court sustains all their exceptions to the report of tho examiners, and their counsel, though not at all confident says that there is hope for them. The contes tants, on the other hand, are satisfied that they will win nnd it looks very much that way unless court altogether rejects tne report of the examiners: and counsel for the contestauts says that it is im protmbio sucn action will be taken. In court on Saturday a rule was granted on the examiners to show cause why they snau noi me in ine uierK or tne court office before Friday next, the requests of the respondents in the oase. The requests ol the contestauts were nied on Saturday.
