The Republican. CITY AND COUNTY. SOUTH SIDE. Mr. Peter Leidecker of 1009 Stafford avenue died at about 7 o'clock last evening.

Mr. Leidecker was a very popular young man fa the community in which he lived. He is survived by a wife. Catherine Kane, whose death was announced in these columns "Wednesday, died from a recent attack of grip and not from consumption as was stated. The Scranton Athletic club, under the direction of Prof.

Carl Stieber as turning instructor and Prof. P. J. Murphy as instructor in the art of self defense, are making great strides toward becoming the leading athletic club in the city. It has already reached as far as any of them and in different contests of last summer they showed their superiority.

They beat the Excelsiors in a tug of war and are now the unbeat en champions of Lackawanna and Luzerne counties as a tug of war team. The St John's T. A. B. society have also added to tboir already large attractions to draw the younger men into the society a gymnasium.

Yesterday two teams were picked from the society and played an interesting game of basket ball. They 'were captained by Thomas 'McAntire and William Gibbs and McAntire's side was the winners. They had three goals to the others two. Tbey are ready to meet any basket ball team in the city. The young people interested in base ball are looking about for good players to organize teams, a number of which will be in this section of the city.

The funeral of the late Patrick Mul derig was largely attended from his late home in Minooka yesterday afternoon. Services were held at St. Joseph's church, Minooka, and interment was made in Minooka Catholic cemetery. Messrs. William and George Burns of Pittston avenue visited Puryea yesterday.

Miss Lizzie Coyne of Locust street is confined to her home with the grip. Messrs. Patrick Flaherty and Henry Kenedy were visitors at Avoca yesterday. Mr. John Gilroy of Dickson City, visited friends on this side yesterday.

Lenten services were conducted at St. John's church last evening by Rev. Father Melley, Mrs. Gutheioz of Cedar avenue, is ill. Captain Sweeney, U.

FOUR FUNERALS WERE HELD DURING That of Roger Haggerty Wai Very Largely Attended Many Friends Gather at the Late Home of Mrs. Mary Harris A More Substantial Parochial Residence for Rev. Father Whalan. There (was a crowded edifice at St Patrick's church yesterday morning when the funeral of the late Roger Haggerty of Scranton street, was conducted at 9:30 o'clock.

Rev. Father McNaJly celebrated the solemn high mass of requiem and preached an impressive sermon. Rev. Father Duno acted as deacon and Rev. Father Fricker of St.

John's German Catholic church of this side was sub tacon. The remains rested in a bear iful casket which was almost od scurd from view by flowers. Among the emblems was a cross, anchor, wreath and several costly, bouquets. A large delegation from the Cath olic Mutual Benefit association No. 44, Oxford Mine Accidental Fund and a committee from Division No.

1, Ancient Order Hibernians attended. At the close of the services the body was taken to Hyde Park Catholic cemetery by Undertaker Wymbs for interment The pall bearers were Messrs. Anthony McAn drew, Anthony Martin, Thomas Judge, James Mulligan, Michael Coleman and Patrick Gallagher. The funeral of the late Mrs. Mary Harris of North Rebecca avenue took place yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and was largely attended.

Services were held in the Jackson Street Baptist church owing to the critical illness of the deceased's sister. The pastor, Rev. Dr. D. C.

Hughes, and Rev. W. S. Jones, of the First Welsh Baptist church, officiated and both spoke briefly and eloquently. The floral offerings were many and beautiful.

Interment was made in Washburn cemetery, many accompanying the remains to the burial grounds. The pail bearers were Messrs. David Jones, Benjamin Hughes, David Argus, Thomas Joseph, Christopher Robertson and John Lloyd. Appropriate and largely atteuded services were conducted yesterday afternoon over the remains of the late John Raub at the residence of the Misses Suover, at 231 Ninth street. Rev.

Mr. Hiorns officiated and spoke eulogistically concerning the many good qualities of the deceased. There were many beautiful and valuable floral designs. The remains were conveyed to the Forest Hill cemetery for interment, followed by a large number. The remains of Royal the infant son of Mr.

and Mrs. William Fuller, of Jiynon street, were interred in the Washburn street cemetery yesterday afternoon. Rev. Thomas A Bell of the Plymouth Congregational church officiated at the services" which began at 3 o'clock. There were many friends of the bereaved parents in attendance.

The address on "Liberty," the first of a series, to be given by the members of Lackawanna Council No. 1, 133, Royal Arcanum, and which was to have been delivered before the regular meeting of the lodge last evening by the orator of the council, Mr. Howell Harris, has been postponed, owing to the illness of the latter at his home on South Main avenue. Rev. J.

B. Whelan, rector of St. Patrick's church on Jackson street, is receiving money necessary for tiie erection of a new and more substantial parochial residence that is now occupied by him and bis assistants. Rev. Fathers McNally and Dunne, at the corner of Jackson street and South Sumner avenue.

A recent meeting of the parishioners was held, the advisability of building discussed and unanimously agreed upon. Since then considerable money has been turned over to Mr. Whelan and everything looks very favor, able for the new structure. It is necessary to raise about $13,000 for the building, which it is proposed to make of steel frame structure and a house equal to the many handsome properties standing on the large plot of ground. An additional sum for furnishing will soon be asked.

Fathor Whelan has consulted Architect F. J. Amsden, and work will soon be commenced on the plans and specifications. Division No. 1, Ancient Order of Hibernians, held a special meeting in its headquarters last evening, the purpose of which was to make final arrangements for the parade to take place, on Monday next atCarbondale.

Itis expected that the lodge will send a large delegation. Mrs. Sylvester Terwllliger and daughter Margaret, of Wilkcs Barre are visiting at the home of the former's parents on Tenth street A very interesting meeting was held last evening by the members of the Young People'sjsociety of the First Welsh Baptist church. The programme was much enjoyed, and the attendance large. There is considerable ioterast manifested here in the St Patrick's eistedfod to be held at Oljphant on Monday under tue auspices oi me ivorites or that locality.

The literary and musical features of the programme are excellent and for the best rendition in each large prizes are offered. Among those who will compete are W. J. Davis' mixed party and Lewis Davis' male voice party. The latter will hold its final rehearsal and complete arrangements for the visit this evening at 8 o'clock at the First Welsh Congregational church.

The latter party will rehearse in St. David's ball tomorrow afternoon at 3.30. At the meeting of the Welsh society, Mr. Isaac Morgan will Bpeak on the theme "is there any Latent Light iu vcais. air.
