THE CALGARY HERALD Tues Sept. 25, 1979 B9 If oi lege scene: Astros, Royals fall Familiar show by old foes Rave reviews aren't turning Howard's head 0 behind eight-ball as season wraps up FORD Not so fast, says Howard. "We're a long way from being a team." he insisted "There are some talented individuals, but they have to work together. "If these guys stick together like last year's team did when things were going bad they should be respectable." The squad currently stands at 14 players with several having been mm ft CWUAA all-star, has been lost to graduation but Raffin. Koepke and Atkin make the cross easy to bear.

Tm really impressed with Atkin's potential" Howard said. "Rommel has been around and he's a coa-chable guy, but I haven't had any trouble with any of the players. They're working hard and they're easy to coach." In the Dinnies' basketball camp, coach Donna Roman has set her roster at 13 with seven returnees, four transfers and two rookies. Holly Pederson, Colleen Finney and Laura Buehning will be missing from last year's squad, but transfers Donna Hanna (Lethbridge), Dori McPhcril (Winnipeg). Cathy Keenan (Lakehead) and Lori Chizik (Alberta) should fill the gap.

The only rookies to make the squad were well-known high school stars Julie Hendrix of St. Francis and Jenny Woods of Dr. ELP. Scarlett. '7ulie is a natural" Roman said.

"She has a great deal of ball sense and game sense and a lot of potential "She also has her head on straight and knows what she wants. I think shell be playing a lot this year." Both the Dinos and Dinnies won't begin the season until late October when the Dinos play their annual Alumni game Oct. 27 and the Dinnies travel to the University of Alberta tournament Oct. 26-28. By Dave Shoalts (Herald staff writer) Gary Howard is in an enviable position.

Last year, the University of Calgary Dinosaurs' basketball coach had to listen to everyone relegate his squad to the Canada West (University Athletic Association cellar in their pre-season prognostications. The Dinos silenced the critics with a second-place finish and a berth in the league final where they were defeated by Victoria Vikings. This season bolstered by several transfers and rookies the Dinos are expected to be a contender, but Howard isn't about to let any pre-season puffery swell his chest. "Last year was a great example of how much people know," Howard said matter-of-factly Monday. "They picked us to finish fifth or last.

Well let that stand as an example. "I'm certainly hopeful, but we have a long way to go. I guess I'm cautiously optimistic." Several reasons for Howard's optimism can be found in 6'9" Rommel Raifin of Kitchener, who-played in Italy last year; Steve Atkin, a 610" transfer from Simon Fraser University and Fred Koepke, an Ontario University Athletic Association all-star last year with Wilfrid Laurier. Throw in highly-regarded rookie Karl Tilleman out of Calgary's Sir Winston Churchill High School and the Dinos have the look of power. HOWARD ROMAN (Associated Press) Bill Virdon and Whitey Herzog aren't about to hold their breath for their respective major league baseball clubs' chances of divisional pennants not after Monday's action.

'It's next to impossible now," said Houston manager Virdon, speaking of Astros' chances to catch Cincinnati Reds in the National League West after falling 2Vi games back when they dropped 5-4 and 8-1 decisions to the lowly Atlanta Braves. 'It's not impossible, it can happen, but it's difficult to be behind that much with only five games to play." "A miracle might not even win it for us now," concurred Kansas City manager Herzog, who hoped for a sweep of the three-game series against California Angels. Instead, they fell four games back in the American League West after losing the opener 4-3. "We could win all five left and still not win it." In other NL action, St. Louis defeated Philadelphia 7-2 and New York stopped Chicago 3-1.

Braves 5-8 Astros 4-1 Jerry Royster hit a run-scoring, ninth-inning single with the bases loaded to rally the Braves to their first-game victory over the Astros. Royster's liner over left fielder Jose Cruz' head came after the Braves had filled the bases with nobody out off loser Joe Sambito, 8-7. Mickey Mahler, 5-11, got the victory in relief. Gary Matthews drove in four runs, including two in a five-run sixth inning, to lead Atlanta's triumph in the second game. Eddie Solomdh, 7-13, scattered five hits for the Western Division's cellar-dwelling team.

Angels 4 Royals 3 California edged closer to the AL West title, as Nolan Ryan, 16-13, pitched a five-hitter and Dan Ford drove in four runs to run his season's RBI total to 101. Ford used two sacrifice flies and a run-scoring single to plate three of his runs as the Angels defeated Larry Gura (12-12) for the first time since 1974, a span of eight straight losses. Cardinals 7 Phillies 2 Ken Oberkfell singled home the tie-breaking run in the sixth inning as St. Louis beat Philadelphia in a game highlighted by Pete Rose's record-making 200th hit of the season. The Phillies' star reached the coveted 200-hit circle for the 10th time in his career with a single iii the second inning, becoming the first major league player to accomplish that feat.

He had shared the record with the legendary Ty Cobb. Mets 3 Cubs 1 Richie Hebner hit three doubles, Elliott Maddox belted his first home run in more than a year and Craig Swan, 13-13, scattered six hits to lead New York over Chicago. dispatched to the junior varsity squad, among them Jamie Park from St Francis High School "We're really high on Park," Howard said. "We thought he'd have a good shot at that fifth guard spot, but some guys surprised us. "George Hardisty has really improved over the summer you can tell he's been working on his game.

But Pcrrk will still end up playing for us." Pat Lee, last year's captain and a (Associated Press) Sometimes where Earl Weaver and Jim Palmer are concerned, even a divisional baseball championship can't keep the antagonists from each other's throats. Pitcher Palmer thinks Mike Flanagan should launch the American League playoffs for the American League East champions, but Weaver has issued a decisive "No." It all started in a shouting match Sunday morning when Palmer, who has missed 15 starts this season because of various ailments, said his right forearm was hurting after pitching one inning in a postponed game Saturday night. '1 was shocked," Weaver said. "I want him to start the first playoff game and now he's worried that he might not be at his best." Palmer, however, has no option but to abide by Weaver's decision, and the pitching ace said Monday that '111 do the best I can" after maintaining he had been issuud an ultimatum by club officials. '1 didn't mean to make it sound like an ultimatum," Weaver said, "but I guess you could take it as such.

Jim was thinking of the ballclub and Flanagan, but when it comes right down to it. I'm going to have to live and die by the decision. If Jim pitches well IU get a little bit of the credit; if not, 111 take all the heat." Although Palmer has just a 9-6 record after winning 20 or more in eight of the last nine seasons, Weaver wants his experience to open the best-of-five series against the Western Division champions. The 33-year-old veteran has a 7-2 record in post-season games. In Chicago, Herman Franks, who had indicated for more than a month that he would not return to manage Chicago Cubs in 1980, officially resigned Monday and coach Joey Amalfitano was named interim manager.

T5 Wranglers add Fehr to roster Calgary Wranglers announced Monday they have obtained the rights of left-winger Clint Fehr from Regina Pats in a Western Hockey League deal Fehr. a native of Red Deer, attended Pats' camp before coming to the Wranglers recently with the permission of Regina general manager Bob Strumm. Meanwhile, as a rule, junior coaches Doug Sauter and Russ Farwell will be helping each other out, but they'll be on opposite sides of the fence in a unique exhibition game tonight at Max Bell Arena (8 p.m.).

Sauter's Wranglers and Far-well's Canucks, which began a working agreement this season, will do battle with lineups shaken up considerably. Wranglers will use defencemen and goalies from the Alberta Junior Hockey League Canucks and vice versa.
