Arledge said he personally considers Clay a better fighter than any of those in the tournament and that he was disturbed at first at the idea of choosing his successor this way. But since Clay's conviction on draft evasion charges, he no longer has any reservations about the tournament.

"Champions come and go in any sport," Arledge said, "and when one passes another steps into his place. This tournament is thus legitimate and valid and the only time for the foreseeable future that all the ills of boxing are precluded. If one of the boxers wins he cannot refuse to fight his next opponent. "This seems to me a very healthy thing. We are contributing a breath of fresh air to a port which has been in ill repute.

I know it's unfortunate that Joe Frazier isn't in the tournament, but I don't think he would have won it anyway." Arledge, who presides over "The Wide World of Sports," "The American Sportsman" and other shows in ABC's fine sports lineup, said he wanted to make it clear ABC is not sponsoring the tournament. But by buying the television rights it is providing the same sort of financial support he believes has helped our amateur teams at home and improved theu- showings in international competition abroad. "I can't understand why a lot of sports writers are putting the I tournament down," he said. "If it works the way it could work it could do a lot of good for the sport. Arledge.

blond, husky and tireless, had been taking shots for a safari in Tanzania which will be filmed for "The American Sportsman" series. He shot the world's record Cape Buffalo two years ago and one of the 20 or so biggest leopards ever. On this trip he will join up with Bing Crosby and Phil Harris who will hunt birds; David Janssen who reported that he shot his first lion the other day, Clint Walker and Gov. John Connally of Texas who hopes to bag leopards. Three of our technicians in Tanzania have been hurt already," Arledge said in his office in the new ABC building.

"But you've got to expect that. We have to get our cameras to precarious and often dangerous places to get the shots we need for our sports and sporting programs." On his return from the safari late this month Arledge will complete plans for covering the Winter Olympics at Grenoble in France and the Summer Olympics in Mexico City, both ABC exclusives. HOLLYWOOD The early morning sun was beginning to rise over Sunset but the waiters at Hollywood's famed Brown Derby were still bringing out full-course dinners to Kim Novak. Peter Finch, Ernest Borgnine, Valentian Cortese, Coral Browne and the other stars assembled in the restaurant this weekend. The late night feast was called producer-director Robert Aldrich for a midnight-to-dawn location scene in MGM's "The Legend of Lylah Clare," the drama about contemporary life in the movie capital.

The action showed a key sequence in the film as Miss Novak portraying a young actress on the brink of stardom, makes her first public appearance before Hollywood's elite. Despite the late hour and the elaborate meal, the cast and production crew were use to the unusual shooting time. Aldrich had previously scheduled two other midnight-to-dawn sessions on Hollywood Boulevard and a spectacular premiere in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatres. Written for the screen by Hugo Butler and Gene Rouverol, "The Legend of Lylah Qare" concerns the events surrounding the making of a motion picture about a former star.
