SALARY FOR CITY TREASURER 1 NDK: a i IONS are that legislation will come before the state assembly at the present session, which will provide for the city treasurer of third class cities, of which New' Castle is one, being placed on a salary basis of probably per year, instead of being paid on a fee system as at present.

1 his is i'ut out the trend of affairs for several years Legislation has placed the office of the county sheriff and the county and other officers upon a salary basis, instead of upon a fee system basis, with a consequent saving of a considerable sum to the; county taxpayer. It seems bjgical that the same move could be made benefit in the case ot the city office. LAWRENCE COUNTY TAKES PRIZES AWRHNCI: county wool growers are rapidly putting their home county in the forefront as a wool growing district. On top the many awards that have been received during the past few years at different exhibitions where wool has been on display, a large number of the prizes at the state farm show wool exhibition, at Harrisburg this week, w-ere given to the Lawrence county growers. New rejoices with the remainder of the county in this achievement of the wool growers.

It is a tribute that is deserved, and one that demonstrates that attention which has been paid to this department of farming industry in the past few years is producing results. vSome years ago the matter of sheep raising and wool growing was revived in l.awrence county, and how successful the efforts have been is shoun in the continued honors that are being won by the farmers of the county. Lven greater results are indicated in the future. Today A Few New Spots. We Know Kemal.

Crane Editorial Copyright, 1926. By HORATIO: 1927 MODEL HIi swimming of the San channel from Santa Catalina Island to the mainland by the 17-year-old Toronto youth was done in true Horatio Algeresque manner. There was the invalid mother back home investing her last penny and all her faith in him, the obstacle of distance overcome on a second-hand motorcycle, no encouragement except from his mother and discouragement even from the gamblers. Not even Alger himself could have improved upon this bound-to-win plot. At (he end of those twenty-miles through chill and choppy other way and the waters George Young found himself as famous as Leander and; unworthy citizen gets in easily.

The mice have carrying passengers to ports In Florida, but they are carrying automobiles as baggage, just like dogs and Billy Goats.

An automobile is necessary all the time now with so many. The number of foreigners coming into this country unlawfully is growing greater each year and runs into the thousands. After those bozos get into Canada or Mexico the matter of getting over the border Is easy. All the border officers are either looking for bootleggers been driven from some place by flood. Western Pennsylvania has it on a lot of places after all.

Charley Chaplin was taken from the liquid diet and placed on a soft one. Those liquid diets are often very destructive to the peace of mind and iamily ties. While there was no hero awaiting him on the opposite shore and though, unlike Byron, he is of reputed modesty, feeorge Young is said to be as well qualified, in physique and physiognomy, for the movies as Byron and Leander. But the public, and perhaps ever the literary critics, will not hold it against him if his adventure reads like a story-book. The story-books picture life as most people think it ought to be and the 1'oronto youth behaved just as most people think he should have.

Aside from the romance, the young swimmer gave a superlative exhibition of stamina, clever headwork, foresight and self- confidence. More than that he had granite determination. Never having been bested by the water he naturally plunged into the Pacific believing it was merely a case of beating the other 101 swimmers to the goal. Like all Algeresque heroes, the Toronto youth won fame and fortune by preparing for that inevitable opportunity which, in the Alger book, always knocks and is never unheeded. just notice how easy it would be.

Some people are too honest. The Hints and Dints Man heard of a fellow who was in charge of some public baths for five years and the records show he never took one. For some reason or other we never could get a thrill out of any one telling us about a wedding. One has to see a wedding to get the real picture. It looks as if the Castle postoffice building is going to be enlarged soon.

The room is sorely needed and we can thank Congressman Phillips for his efforts to get us the new addition. He surely has worked hard and he deserves a lot of credit for putting it over big enough. The Hints and Dints Man often wishes he had strong convictions about everything as so many people have. It must be a great comfort to have no doubts, no Illusions and no fears.
