B6 THE CALGARY HERALD May 28, 1979 Anne Murray gives warning too Dr. Paul Ruble To your good health Exploding bottle cuts singer jii I ww www-" I "ti' if Coca-Cola, will not explode because of their design. But most of the large bottles containing Pepsi-Cola, 7-Up or Canada Dry exploded on the first test. "The ones I'm talking about are the torpedo-shaped bottles," the singer said. "The one that cut me was a Pepsi bottle." Tibor Gregor, executive director of the Canadian Soft Drink Association, said soft-drink manufacturers were not aware of any abnormal breakage with the bottles and there is no cause for Told of his comments, Murray said: "Well, he may not think so but 111 bet you anything he's never had one explode on him.

"When you see it on TV (news reports) you don't get the impact of an actual explosion, and I'm telling you that's what happened. It's like a bomb. '1 can't say every bottle will do that but then I'm not about to check it out either." TORONTO (CP) Singer Anne Murray has added her voice to a recent warning by the federal product safety branch about exploding soft-drink containers after she was injured by a shard of glass from a large pop bottle. Murray was taken to hospital for stitches to a cut in her foot after a bottle exploded while she was transferring it to the refrigerator in her home last week. 1 just had three stitches in the foot which wasn't important, but at the time it seemed monumental," Murray said in an interview Friday.

"It could really be a serious injury resulting from something like this and there's no need for it. If I can do something to prevent will." The federal branch warned recently that most 1.5-litre pop bottles can explode simply by falling over on a hard surface. The bottles con-, tain so much, gas pressure that a slight impact can cause them to burst. Tests have shown that some of the bottles, such as those used by Dear Dr. Ruble: My elderly mother is in good health, but she has a sleep problem.

She's in a vicious circle can't sleep at night naps too much during the day, and so on. Sleeping pills don't help anymore than over-the-counter medicines. If we could break the circle we could help her, but how? Any suggestions for this problem which, I guess, many older people have? F.C. There are more than 20 million Americans with sleep problems. Most are in the older age group.

Sleeping pills don't help, and can defeat their purpose by leaving the user drowsy during the day. Older people react more to such medicines and if they have little else to do during the day they nap. Over-the-counter products may contain antihistamines and can produce the same daytime drowsiness. Two suggestions might help break the circle. Select a pleasant day for a fairly long drive, a picnic lunch or a similar activity.

Plan to arrive home at a reasonable bedtime when your mother should be pleasantly primed for an evening of sleep. Don't stop there, but plan to keep her busy the next day out of her bedroom. That brings me to the second suggestion. Many elderly people become, for want of a better phrase, "bedroom zombies," spending entirely too many daytime hours there. The bedroom becomes only a place for uneasy inactivity.

See if you cant persuade your mother to spend more time in other parts of the house. This can provide a good psychological edge. Since sleep problems can be related to specific ailments (kidneys, heart) have her examined thoroughly before you try your new psychology. One way or another you should be able to get this lady off of her insomnia merry-go-round. Hoarseness follows thyroid surgery Dear Dr.

Ruble: I am to have a thyroid gland opera-, tion. I am concerned because I have heard it can leave you without a voice afterwards. Is this true? Will I be able to smoke afterward? You can expect some hoarseness and soreness for a week after surgery. There are risks in any surgery of this kind, depending on just what the surgeon is con-fronted with when he approaches the gland. Perma-, nent voice change is one, but with modem surgical techniques that risk is quite small.

The nerve that controls -the vocal cords lies dangerously close to the gland. Certain thyroid problems actually involve this nerve, which is why hoarseness can be a sign of thyroid disturbance. Antibiotics and drinking water Dear Dr. Ruble: Should a person drink more of less water while taking antibiotics? H.C. More is recommended when treating a urinary tract infection.

Otherwise just satisfy normal thirst. Your thyroid plays a critical health role in everthing from eyesight to fertility. The booklet "Your Thyroid: How Works for You" explains this impor-, tant. and misunderstood gland. To get a copy, enclose 65 cents and a long addressed envelope and send to to Dr.

To cut costs, Hutchison said he has asked the ministry of health to bend its rules and allow a member of the hospital's physiotherapy staff to visit the Swarey home daily and possibly have a nurse there full-time as well. He said he expects the ministry to agree as a goodwill gesture to the Amish people and because this is a rare case. Although the decision on when the pair can leave hospital rests with the attending physician, Hutchison said recovery usually takes at least nine months. Constant physiotherapy is needed to prevent muscle deterioration. LONDON, Ont.

(CP) A huge hospital bill is facing the two young people from an Amish community who contracted polio earlier this month, says Dr. Doug Hutchison, Middlesex County medical officer of health. Hutchison said Ella Swarey, 20, and her brother, Solomon, 26, are recovering well but both have paralysis of the right leg and it is not known how long their family can afford to keep them in Victoria Hospital. Like other members of the Amish community in North Dorchester Township, 24 kilometres east of London, they do not subscribe to the Ontario Health Insurance Plan or a similar plan. The magazine said various studies based on anonymous questionnaires show that up to 13 per cent of physicians in general and 25 per cent of gynecologists admitted to sexual contact with patients, ranging from kissing to intercourse.

The studies showed that 19 per cent of practising physicians believe such contact is not only all right but "actually felt this was useful to patients." the magazine said. The article noted that a similar study shows 25 per cent of medical students polled thought sexual contact with patients was all right "under the right circumstances." The article quotes Dr. Barbara Bess, associate pero-fessor of psychiatry at New York Medical College, as saying that until recently such doctors remained unpunished because of doctors' "unspoken rule" not to talk about each other and because a complaining woman was considered a "hysterical female." More women are reporting such incidents, she said, because a woman patient "is much more aware of her options and her credibility." Gynecologists placed first in admitting such conduct, general practitioners second, then psychiatrists, internists and surgeons fifth. REEDSVTLLE, Pa (AP) Pennsylvania state officials are worried that the Amish buggies clip-clopping down the streets of Reedsville may be bringing a polio virus with them. Polio, now rare in the United States, erupted first among the E-shacoquillas Valley's 1,500 Amish, most of whom initially shunned the polio vaccine.

But last week a woman in nearby Yeagertown, who had no contact with the Amish. came down with non-paralytic polio. The 36-year-old woman became the fourth polio victim this year in central Pennsylvania and only the fifth case in the U.S. since January. There were 1,536 cases reported in Pennsylvania in 1954, before the Salk vaccine came into general use.

Cases have averaged less than one a year since 1968. Health officials, alarmed that the virus which can cause paralysis, meningitis or intestinal problems had spread outside the Amish community, have opened immunization centres in Mifflin County where residents were expected to line up for doses this weekend. 'If we can do away with a large pool of susceptibles, the virus would not be active for long because it would have so much trouble finding susceptibles," said Dr. William Parkin of the state health department.
