A tone of hesitation and uncertainty developed in the securities market last week, and was reflected In the uneven course of The rise of the previous week gave place several times to a reactionary tendency. The extent of the previous advance and the period of its duration gave some grounds for the pause, other reasons for which were found in various unfavorable de velopments of the week.

Most obvious of the disturbing factors were the increasing gravity of the 'Mexican situation and the various proposals for congressional investigations of so called trusts. 1 The degree of resistance shown by stocks to these unfavorable factors seemed to indicate confidence in fundamental conditions on the part of large holders of securities. The abundance of money supplies and the growing difficulty of finding employment for them in commercial chan nels relieves the stock market from pressure of liquidation on that score. In the bond market the pressure of funds for investment continues to make a distinct impression. Bond Issues Restricted, New bond issues are in restricted volume and are being readily taken care of.

A large proportion of the new issues is for refunding purposes. designed to extend or tako up short term issues made in the period following the financial crisis of 1907. Demand for new capital is limited by the doubtful industrial and trade outlook. An improving investment inquiry for existing bond issues follows as a natural consequence "and is reflected in the growing volume of business in the bond department of the stock exchange. An index of the backward industrial THE AMERICAN COMPANY, JAMBi movement is found in the reduced iron Reardon, Manacer.

tbe lower prices for farm products, which is serving to reduce the amounts for ready expenditures in farming com munities. The continued high promise for crops, so far as can be determined at this season, keeps up hopes for agri cultural prosperity and acts as the most substantial offset to unpromising MINES ARE KEPT GOING FILLING APRIL ORDERS May opened with a large number of orders on anthracite operators books which they were unable to illl In April and which, in accordance with the usual rule, went over Into the new month. The price of prepared sizes advanced ten cents per ton automatically, and chestnut coal, which opened in April 25 cents a ton hlg 'her than in 1910, ia this month selling for 35 cents more than lt did last May. New orders since the first, of the month have been light, but this Is usually the case In Consumers take a few days to look Into their re quirements before ordering coal at advanced prices. There is now enough business in sight to keep the mines going full time for most of the month, and as In April the only difficulty is to supply the demands of consumers promptly.

The trade is still congratulating It self over the large business In April. The sales of coal during the month were larger, lt Is believed, than In any month In its history. The Reading, for Instance, while lt shipped considerably less coal than in April of last year, sold more coal than in any month in 102'A i's history, and, as a matter of fact it me company naa naa on hand cer 101 tain sizes in the quantltes which were wantod, It could have disposed of a much larger quantity than was actual ly sold. Other of tlwi large companies had a similar experience. This month such a demand for coal can hardly be expected, but lt will be a very Import ant and profitable month for all the large producing companies.
