Their manager and producer David Rubinson says it is "impossible to describe the music of the Pointer Sisters." "They use their voices like instruments." Rubinson is largely responsible for the girls' success. Before they joined forces with him, the Pointers were singing commercial bop and getting nowhere. At one time, the Pointers found themselves in Houston, penniless and out-of-work after a scries of singing engagements fell through. As a last resort, they telephoned Rubinson and cried for help. "I didn't believe it," he recalled.

"I was getting this call from a group of girl singers I'd never heard of, asking for plane tickets back to California. How could I refuse?" But the veteran of the pop music business was quick to realize he had a winning team on his hands. Rehearsals began immediately and within a few months, the girls were inside a studio recording the album which was to change their career. "Choosing the material for the Pointers is of ultimate importance," Rubinson said. "But we now have all the best CABARET OCTOBERFEST ROCK Nightly from 8.30 p.m.

Much of their music is jazz-influenced, although the black gospel sound, a throwback to their early days as junior church choirgirls, runs through all their songs. They arrange then- own harmonies, sometimes "making fun of the song" to get the right sound.

"You can learn a lot in your back garden." These days, the Pointer Sisters have found another place to sing the world's major concert halls. Anita, Ruth, Bonnie and June are four Negro girls lrom an Oakland, ghetto. They grew up in v-erty. There was only one luxurysinging.

"People wonder how we can harmonize so closely," Ruth said after a smash concert here by the Pointers. "But we've always sung together, ever since we can remember. It just comes naturally." The concert, their first appearance in Canada, showed why the Pointers have, in six months, shot from singing obscurely in backing lineups to recording a fast-selling album and perfecting a top-billing stage routine which leaves audiences breathless. WORDS IRRELEVANT Their songs can only be described as high-energy music. Most of their material is fast, with complicated harmony lines and syncopated rhythms.

In many songs, words are irrelevant. Their unique style Is created by the sounds of their voices backed only by a scattering of instrumentation. In one song, That's How I Feel, the girls carry on an entire conversation without a word of understandable language. "It's all gibberish, but it makes sense to June said. "Sometimes we go around the house singing to each other in scat instead of loved women.
