The OECD believes that the industrialized nations will escape recession in 1977 but inflation will ease only slightly and unemployment will increase. The OECD issued an optimistic report in July but in October the slowdown of economic recovery brought gloomy unconfirmed reports that the OECD in December would forecast a recession for 1977.

We each owe for federrlly insured school loans, with payments beginning in February 1977. We have no children and have $9,000 in savings. Can we afford a $40,000 house? How should we prepare for retirement? Our jobs do not offer retirement programs. You've done pretty well In the saving department for a couple so young' and so recently out of school. Obviously, though, when you start talking about retirement at the age of 24 you're looking down an extremely long (41-year) tunneL How do you know youH always be working for the same employer who provides retirement program Ah, well.

On the basis of your present combined income, you could, of course, afford a home assuming a $6,000 down payment (youll want to hold back about $3,000 of your saving as a cushion). With a $34,000 mortgage, we're talking about payments for principal ana interest of about $227 a month (assuming a 9 rate and a 30-year mortgage). Insurance and maintenance costs would still keep such a hotse we" within the ballpark for you. But what about the possibility of children and your reversion to a one-income status The lender, under recent legislation, can't legally refuse you a mortgage on the grounds that the wife is in her childbaaring years, but you, most certainly, must keep this in mind. Could you afford $274 month-plus on the husband's salary alone YouT.

either have to keep this very much in mind in making your decision, or, by the same token, decide right now that you won't have a child until circumstancesprincipally the husband's earning capacity permit a one-income -status, at least temporarily. As I said, you can't automatically assume that both of you wit- always be working for an employer who doesn't provide a pension plan, but since that's the situation now, you're wise to take the position that this may always be the case and act accordingly. So, by all means, set up an Individual Retirement Account for each of you. Both the annual contribution and subsequent reinvested dividends, capital gains and-or interest are tax-free until, at retirement, you begin drawing on them. I'd suggest, at your age, a good, no-load, growth-oriented mutual fund.
