22 Monday, Dkember 7, 1970 1 Below The Hill by DAVE BROWN The Ottawa Journal POWER PLAY: To create interest and, give its subcommittees more muscle, -the Pineview-Clearview-Grenfell Glen Property Owners' Association did something a little different this year. Members went through their area looking for persons' with special aptitudes or interests, to fill matching jobs. As a result, the police committee is now headed by RCMP Assistant Commissioner Cyril Kirk. Russ Jackson reports for recreation. Fire committee is in the hands of dominion fire Commissioner Ross Switzer, and design draftsman Tom Newton reports for engineering.

Horticulture is in the hands of jprofessional engineer Farrell Chown. Burke Starinard is to co-ordinate these committees, and Ken McAlpine is in charge of special tasks Chairman of the association is Mrs. George Ofr and vice-chairman is I. E. Erdman.

Mary Hide is secretary and Burns, honorary vice-chairman. CAPITAL CAPERS: Skf patrollers aro sUrting to get together after the long summer lay-off, 'and here's one of their stories being kicked around. jit involves patroller Leon Blauer, who has a fancy car, that he puts much time, effort and pride into. During the' summer, so they say, his car developed a shimmy at 30 miles an hour. Ho immediately nursed it into the nearest garage to have it checked.

After leaning on the vtMtRosHc, SURGERY. 11 Slip mechanic, and warning him that he was not dealing with just any car and to be very careful, he waited for the results. While he waited, he drew mental pictures of a repair bill that would break him. It didn't take long for the mechanic to spot the trouble. In front of witnesses, he said: "Flat tire." BANK AND SPARKS: Ernie Ingram passes along this definition.

vv LEGAL SLIPS: Ottawa lawyers at annexation hearings at Smits Falls last week brightened up the otherwise tedious hearings by confusing a few names. It started when R. B. Hutton, representing Smiths Falls, received -a message and told Ottawa, lawyer Don Diplock: "Don, you are wanted on the telephone." Mr. Diplock returned moments later, with the comment that he hoped the caretaker of the church where they were did not get too many calls.

The caretaker's name was Niblock, and it was causing confusion! Mr. Hutton apologized for the mistake A little later hvthe hearings, Walter Baker, representing North Elmsley Township, asked that the town's application to annex part of the township be withdrawn: "That is if Mr. Nutton will withdraw the town's application." Mr. Hutton considered the mistake made in his name, and quipped: "It was my hearing I apologized for, not my sanity!" T. FANCY THAT: School teacher passes along this overheard conversation.

GOREN ANSWERS TO BRIDGE QUIZ Q. 1 As South, vulnerable, you hold: 4A10 9642 7K3 OKI J1I3 The bidding has proceeded: South West North East Pass Pass 1 Past What is your response? A. Whllt normally wa- would five partner a little leeway when he has opened In the third Mat, in this instance it might be putting too much pressure on him to merely Jump in spades, so we would gamble it eut by leaping right to game. Q. 2 Both sides vulnerable, and as South you hold: 6AK104 7108IS42 OAS A The bidding has proceeded South West North East 1 Pass 2 Pass 2 Pass 3 Pass '3 Pass 4 Past 8 1 What do you bid now? A.

Five clubs. While -partner has not shown 'outstanding strength, he is to-be relied oa for a seven card suit. Your weakness in hearts' should not be a deterrent, for partner is marked with a singleton at most. With two of the suit he should have returned to hearts after the three spade bid. Q.

3 As South, vulnerable, you hold: A53 OK10 94 4QJ73 The bidding has proceeded: North East South West 1 4 Pass 10 is) 3 4 Pass What do you bid now? A. Three spades, a cue bid suggesting slam possibilities. Your hand is worth 14 points in support of clubs and partner has opened and jumped. You. will support clubs on the next round and the extent of your raise will depend on partner's next bid.

Q. 4 Neither side vulnerable, and as South you hold: 4A43 0642853 The bidding has proceeded: West North East Pass Pass 10 Pass What do you bid now? A. One heart. No thought should be given to a jump bid. The old fashioned player would undergo a quick change in blood pressure at the thought of having passed three honor tricks.

In point of fact this hand is worth only 11 points and If partner passes one heart, no game will be Q. 5 Neither side vulnerable, and as South you hold: 4AC2 OJ3 4Q42 The bidding has proceeded: South West North East Pass Pass IV Pass 37" Pass 3 NT Pass What do you bid now? A. Pass. You have a S-J-S-X distribution, one of the best for no and with in all suits you should prefer to play, for nine tricks. 1 Q.

6 East-West vulnerable and as South you hold: 4KQM742 OS52 4Q7I The bidding has proceeded: Sooth West North. East 3 4 Pass 4 Past 7 What do' you bid A. Pass. Partner presumably heard you bid three spades, announcing that your hand is worthless in anything else. If he bids four hearts it is in the belief that he expects to make the contract in his own hand.

Dont be a. nursemaid. Q. 7 Both sides vulnerable, and as South you hold: 4A8S2 The bidding has proceeded: South. West North East 1 Pass .20 Pass 2 NT Pass 47 Pas 7 What do you bid now? A.

Our preference is for six hearts; It is true that we have only IS points in high cards, but valued at hearts our hand is worth three more points after North supports the suit, one for. each of the doubletons and one for the fifth card of the supported heart suit. Q. 8 You are South, vulnerable, and you hold: 4AJ10 7KS7642 4AK83 The bidding has proceeded: South West North East IS? 2 0 Dble. Pan What do you bid now? A.

Pass. It is true thtt we are normally reluctant to leave in a low level double when void of the adverse suit. In this case, however, we have more than enough defensive values to justify our opening bid; and it Is very probable that partner -Is short In hearts when he chooses to a nonvulnerable opponent THE; FAMILY CIRCUS By Bil Kcane j. sx if sr i ii 1 "otw I Br.i-n.rWT-, I Irk" VtL Forgive me, I usually don't indulge in this practice, ttut I've been caught up in the wage-price spiral."
