'42. Thursday, Jan. 30, 1975 (By ftfC tagfcwr The Ottawa Journal Canada slow to BELOW the HILL Dave Brown Conversations with a spaceman "A study group is being formed to study the possibilities of migrating to another planet in this system." Hie line is part of an ad that has been appearing in local papers recently. Thursday we found the man who has been placing those ads. He's a small, thin, nervous man, and he sat in the living room of his East End apartment, surrounded by books and newspaper clippings covering topics ranging from religion to unidentified flying objects to psychic pheno mena.

There was a copy of The Hollow Earth, and The Land of Mu. He first made it clear that I may have difficulty understanding what he was about to explain, but he would try. Early in his explanation he said: "On Feb. 1972, I was given, and officially accepted, control of spaceship Earth." He was right. This was going to be difficult.

Much material He had pulled several newspapers and magazines out from under the couch he was sitting on and headlines that my eye included: Most Human Life on This Planet to Die in Four Years. UFOs Over Spain Said to be 5,000 Years Old. Behind him, on the wall, was a picture of Pope and two paint-by-number Chinese figures. Had he had any response to bis advertisements? "So far I've had three phone calls and two letters. But they're from curiosity seekers and kooks." He went on to explain his theory as I scanned quickly through, some of the printed articles.

His ideas at first didn't appear much further-out than many of the printed theories. Basically, it's his belief that there's another "inner world" right here on Earth, but on a different "wave" or "dimension." He has made contact with this other world, he says, and soon such contact will become more commonplace. There was some strange noise from beneath the sofa. He said excuse me, kneeled to peer under the couch, and said: "Stop that!" The noise continued. He reached under and pulled out a large, long-haired grey cat.

I relaxed Metcalfe entry In some ways his theories could be easily tied to a book now on the best-sellers list in North America The 'Bermuda Triangle. Strange disappearances could be explained by a shift into another dimensional world. How had he entered this inner world? "You can't just wander in and out. I found it by accident. I was entering a smokeshop on Metcalfe Street one day, and suddenly everything changed.

There I was. No dirty cars. No long-haired hippies. Everything was clean and beautiful and everybody was happy." Although he spent only a lew hours in the inner world, he said, the shift back to our world had been a strain. Longer days He now feels it is his duty to make others aware of this inner world, and he gives the impression of urgency fa his cause.

He believes the world is going to tip over, and we're all going to wind up in the inner world. But it shouldn't be too bad, because you'll have a watch with 72 hours on it, and only have to work eight. But what about space travel mentioned in his ad? That's part of the other dimension. UFO sightings nowi. are of craft that somehow stray into the wrong dimension.

But for those in the inner world, space travel is an everyday thing. The key is to find a way into that dimension. "And Tdoh't To this point I found the conversation interesting. After all, I'm one of those buffs who still has sore eyes from watching Star Trek re-runs. This nervous man was using the jargon and deadpan style of Mr.

Spock, and that pointy-eared Vulcan could talk mc into believing anything. Spoils it all "I want you to hear something," the man said, rising from the couch and going to a tabic to turn off the radio. He took out a tape cassette, snapped it into a recorder and pushed a button. I almost expected to hear a message from space. It wasn't It was the nervous man's own voice.

He sounded like the captain of spaceship Earth. That's the difference. Mr. Spock knew when to quit. The Family Circus i IWJ.T.

17 T. "It you're not good the barber ,1 will use this strop on By BOB BOWMAN In early Canada and well into the 19th century, roads were so bad that it was preferable to travel by water. In fact, many of the early roads were only portages along water routes. When the arrival of the Loyalists led to the development of Ontario, citizens were expected to help build the roads and devote a number of days every year to this work. It was hard labor and some of the people escaped it by paying others to do the work for them.

These roads were, so rough that it was difficult to travel over them except during the winter when the snow provided a better surface. Contributions for road-build- ing were often sought. A group of people at Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake) advertised on Jan. 30, 1799, for money to be left at depots along the" route to Ancaster. More money was needed when the road two-thirds completed and another appeal was made.
