Journal- iu muuy, juii. 7j The Family Circus' TELEVIEWS BE HEARD 23 4 3 2 7 3 Clarence Metcalfe 1 imr PBS comes to Ottawa via cablevision pipeline Public Broadcasting System programming, considered by many to be the best on this continent, will add more TVvariety foe cablevision customers in Ottawa and area when it begins Monday morning at 8.30. The signal is being picked up by cablevision from jhe PBS station in Watertown (Ch 18 VHF) and will be at 4 on your channel selector. Testing has been going on for the ast couple of weeks, and signal strength has proved to be good particularly because One of the inost satbfying7 aspects of, PBS programming, no doubt, will be that there are no commercials (although there may cornea day when the CBC have them either, and take all the costs out of our pockets).

During the mornings, when school is to, programming will be basically educational TV. This is roughly from 8.30 a.m. to about 3.30 p.m., Mdnday through Friday. The educational programming on PBS has been classed as excellent, including' programs such as Sesame which entertain, and therefore educate aXUttle more effectively. Children's entertainment programs are the usual fare between 4 p.m.

and 6.30 p.m. in the afternoon, and these too, are of a high order not the mind-boggling or violence things too often thrown at children indiscriminately by other channels. In. the evening, after 6.30, adult programming will offer tog-notch documentaries series such as the Ascent of Man, Theatre, in America and fine music, such as performances by the Boston 'Pops "Orchestral When important events tense, such as Watergate hearings, PBS usually carries more complete dossier by dossier reports, and again, without commercial breaks. If your a reasonably modern one, there should be little problem -with the signal on Channel 4r The-only problem might be with sets in highrise apartments where the CBOT signal isvery strong, or, if there is a bad tuner oh your TV set.

Cablevision officials feel; that 90'per cent of their customers should have no TTT- A few more points about programming. If you are an addict of British TV series, PBS caters more to this type of programming than most of me Others these days. Programs like Upsta're, Downstairs, and Monty -Python, are regular fare.
