Cambria linked galvanized barb wire, best barb wire made, can put it up like chain wjthout a stretcher. Sold by J. J. Casmire Co's. We have any amount of money to loan at 6 per cent, and small commission added.

Call immediately at the Neosho Valley Xand Office. The Christian Church Sewing Society has several quilts and other articles that will be sold at auction at the Opera House next Tuesday night. There will be asocial to-night at the residence of Mr. D. Ewart, for the benefit of the Band of Hope Sunday School.

All are invited to attend. Iola is going to have the biggest celebration ever witnessed in the Neosho Valley. Paste this up where you will be sure- to see it about the 3rd of July. Mr. Goodhue's -new house will be ready for occupancy next week.

It presents a handsome appearance and adds much to the attractiveness of the east end of the avenue. The ladies of the Presbyterian Church will stive an entertainment in the Opera House on the afternoon and evening of Decoration Day. Further announcement will be made in due time. I will duplicate and allow a discount on any prices made by any reliable firm on all heavy machinery, such as engines, boilers, fittings, etc. Can always give figures on second hand machinery.

A. W. Beck. The Carriage Works well is progressing favorably with indications that gas will be found at a much less depth man in either of the other wells. It will probably be two or three weeks however, before anything definite is ascertained.

We always keep on hand and are duly authorized to tell thn fnlinur- ing articles, which are the best of Uieir Juna: uueklen's Arnica Salve, King's New Discovery, Ballard's Snow Iiiniment, Hollaud's Hore Houud Syrup. Scott Son. We see by the Colony Free Press that Rev. S. M.

Irwin's barn, at Geneva, was struck by lightuiug last week and totally destroyed with its contents including farm implements and several head of horses and cattle. The loss is about $4,000, half insured. A little item com- from Emporia Ui the effect that the board or trade of that city ordered copira or the Ar. Exchange. It Iola organizes a board of trade, and that board orders 3,500 copies of the Registeb, we will give them a paper that will open the eyes of the eflete fogies in the east The Registers announcement last week, made on the authority of the Board of Trustees, that McCook Post would probably not undertake the management of a celebration, and its insistence upon the necessity of having the matter undertaken at once bv soma one, had the effect of causing the matter to be thoroughly discussed.

And the common judgment was so heartily in favor of having the Post take charge of it, that at their meeting Saturday night they decided to do so, and we now have the great pleasure of announcing that the One Hundred and Eleventh Anniversary of the Independence of the United States will be celebrated atlola in the highest style of ine art unuer ine auspices or Mcuook Post. G. A. R. A committee consist ing of Dr.

J. W. Scott, W. J. Ihrig, John Walters, T.

8. Stover and 8. Mo-Claren, was appointed as executive committee. They have already secured subscriptions to tnc amount of $291.50 with the promise of more if it is needed and nave telegraphed for nrominent speakers. Further announcement need not be made now.

The fact that the celebration is under the auspices of 3IcCook Post and in charerc of the committee above named, is sufficient assurance that that it will be a brilliant success. We understand that Prof. Olin has the offer of a professorship in one of me leuumg euucaiionai institutions or the State, and that if certain details can be arranged to his satisfaction he will accept it. While rejoicing in the Professor's call to come up higher, we cannot Dut sincerely regret nis loss to our schools. For the past four years he has held the position "of principal here, mid under his conduct the schools nave steadily advanced until they are not excelled, if indeed they are equalled by the public schools of anv other cilv in the State.

It will be difficult to supply his place. Some one who is evidently tired of asking other people how hot it is, stole ine tncrmomcter trom in Trent of Scott Son's drug store Monday night. This is the third thermometer this hrm has had stolen within a short time. They say they don't wish the parties who took them any particular harm, but they feel it their duty to warn them that if they don't mend their ways they will fetch up sometime in a place where they will not bo able to measure the heat with their little stolen themometers. From our friend Doc.

Whittiugton, of Kincaid, who was in town Wednes day, we learn that the K. C. and Pacific road is going to make another etlort to get bonds voted in township. The proposition now is to have bonds voted to the amount of and petitions arc being circula ted to navo an election called. Mr.

Whittiugton thinks the result is likely to be the same as in the last two elections. We are told that the public senti ment against tardiness in our city High School was 60 strong the past year that when a pupil entered the room after school was called he was greeted by his fellow pupils with a sup pressed due distinct groan, it is doubtless owing to this public senti ment mac ine scuooi made tbe unpar alleled record of but nine tardy marks during the entire year. Mrs. Turner's stock of spring and summer millinery goods is now complete and presents a most attractive display. Everything is new and, being bought after personal inspection, is of the very best style.

The stock is sufficiently large and varied to buit every taste, and should be examined before purchases are made elsewhere. W.C.ThrashersoldMrs.Weller's farm just north of town, this week, toa Mr.S, 3Ir. Ruble will take possession in a few days and will at once begin extensive improvements, building a new barn, a large addition to the house, etc. We understand that he will also invest quite heavily in Iola property. On June 18 of last year the Register gaye notice that Iola would have no celebration that year but that she would spread herself next year and everybody would have to stand from under.

Next year has come, and true to announcement Iola has begun to spread herself. Let everybody be governed accordingly. This office did a large amount of printing this week for Messrs. Conk-ling, Fisher and Crigler, proprietors of a new steam washing machine for which tbey bold letters patent. We are no judge of a washing machine but those who are say that this is one of tbe best, and we wish the proprietors success with it.

We notice that Miss Lillian Bel I is among the graduates of the State Uni versity who haveeceived the honor of an appointment toa position on the program of Commencement Day. This honor is one that is eagerly won only by tbe best students, and Miss Bell is to be congratulated on achieving it. The Commissioners wercJfe session last Friday and Saturday to inspect the abutments of the Geneva bridge, visit the poor farm aud attend to other minor matters. Among other things they decided to have the Court House finished wtth galvanized iron cornice, which will much improve its appear ance. Mr.

M. L. Herford, a commerical traveler, recently purchased a lot east of the school house and has begun the erection of a neat residence. Mr. Her ford located in Iola after having visited nearly ail the towns inKansas.because lie likes it as a place of residence better than any of them.

We make no apology for devoting so much space to a report of the Commencement exercises. The Register is proud of the Iola school, proud of its teacuers, proud of its pupils and proud of the class of '87. and wants to attract as much attention toward them as possible. The Inter-State has published its last number at Humboldt and we un derstand the material is being shipped to ArKansas uity wuere Mr. Smith will open a job office.

His departure from Humboldt certainly leaves a good opening there for a straightdemocratic newspaper. A church in Franklin, Connecticut, prints its notices at a cost of a dollar each Sunday and distributes them to the people as they pass out instead of making an advertising bureau and bulletin board of the pulpit. If you want a carpet rocker of what ever style, size or price, you cannot help being suited at Patterson Co's. They have a whole room full of them.

Fifteen cents for strawberries and ten cents for ice cream. Cake free. Now that our celebration is assured cannot the band gather itself together and get in shape to furnish the music? Iola has too much talent in that line to ask for outside help. When you want good groceries at bed rock prices call at the Star Gro cery House of Kingsley Wharton, and you will find that you can sav money by buying of them. The first strawberries of the season reached this market on Tuesday.

They retailed at 25 cents a box and the average house holder, after inquiring the price, went away sorrowful. New veranders on the north and east sides of the Leland hotel add much to the appearance and comfort of that popular hostelry. We understand that a sample room is to be built on the west side. PERSONAL. The Registeb had a pleasant call last Monday from its old friend, Ollie etewart, rormeny oi numooidt, but now of Parsons.

He says that the Kansas City and Pacific railroad is bound to be built, and that contracts for the grading are already let as far a Moran. We may be permitted to add that Mr. Stewart's errand in Iola was to secure from the Probate Judge permission to marry Miss Katie Fisher, daughter of Paul Fisher, of Humboldt. Henderson, Iola, Kas. LETTER LIST List of letters remaiuinir in the post office at Iola, May 14th, 1SS7. The Poultry Yard. Conducted by Clarence Norton, Moran, Kansas, an experle'nced breeder, actively engaged In thj business. Keep the young chicks growing, and let the hen mothers have all they want to eat so they will commence laying soon.

Those who put twenty to thirty chicks under one hen during oar recent cold weather, know now wnat tne Roup is. It never will pay to put over thirteen chicks under one hen, unless in summer. When chicks are fed and cared for so as to just keep them at a standstill, the food given is actually inrown away. This is tne most wasteful ana extravagant method ever puraued and there will be no returns from tne investment. While in Iola last week we had the pleasure of meeting one of our lady friends who is deeply interested in poultry.

She spoke some very pleas ant and complimentary words for the poultry yard, and gave us an interesting account of her own experience. She had broilers large enough to fry, lots of small chicks and more coming out every day. We wish her unbounded success and hope she will invite the editor of the Register to a dinner of fried chicks of her own rearing. If she does not, I am afraid Charlie will die a debtor to his own stomach. Mrs.

James Spangler, of Lone Elm, Anderson comity, wants to know if she shall keep account of her eggs till November. Yes. We want all who are striving for the prize to not get discouraged, and when making up their reports to give names of breeds kept, number of eggs set, number of eggs hatched, number of chicks reared aud anvthimr interesting it tney can Count the fowls each month and if any arc disposed of state just when and we can make up tne average oeiter. Her ess record for two months is very good indeed. Mrs.

Magner says nerauckiings win not eat. She has tried every known dainty but they refused to eat and drooped and died. Usually ducklin gs will do well on anything that young chicks will, but her experience puzzles me. Can any one tell her what to do? If they were mine, I should thoroughly dust the hen mother with Persian Insect Powder (3JLiOz.) also the ducklings, and put them in a new coop, or an old one thoroughly cleansed and whitewashed and force them to swal low whole pepper and pills made of flour wet in aiconoi. u.
