20 THE CALGARY HERALD March 28, 1970 'llllllllllllllllllllllllltllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllltlllf Radical Christian Institute Shakes Up' Social Traditions them. For example, what's a radical? "I think if you want to define radical, you have to do a bit of entymology and realize it goes to the root of whatever problem is being tackled. "Too many young radicals today deal only with surface problems. They see something Bible Cut From Service TORONTO (CP)-The Bible is something John Gillham, a lay preacher, can do without in church services. So is the pulpit, for that matter, or the lectern.

He prefers strutting around in front of his congregation, hurling questions at them, replying to questions or reading from Playboy magazine or even Karl Marx, "if I felt it was pertinent" Mr. Gillham, 52, a public relations man, is a United Church lay preacher who believes church services need updating because musty traditions are no longer in keeping with the times. "The trouble with today's preaching in most cases is that it's too one-sided, couched in a theological jargon that is too far removed from everyday language and it goes on for far too long," he said in an interview. "Gospel goodies" are on their way out, he said. The up-and-coming thing is communication with churchgoers about the world.

"He presents himself as the way, the truth and the life, and I accept that. Once I have accepted that, then I'm committed to asking questions about that," Dr. Hart says. Present society cannot be accepted by anyone with a radical analysis Dr. Hart says, because it is impossible to work within the established framework of society and not compromise freedom.

To cure this, serious introspection is needed, by persons in society, individually, and collectively. "It's true you can't spend all your time being introspective, but this introspection is a necessary first step." The family of the future is going to have to do some serious stocktaking, Dr. Hart says, because today "the family is a lost cause, as is every social institution." The main criterion of the family, he says "is that it should be a place where new human beings learn to live in a protected environment in that in the family a new human being learns to become responsible while not yet held responsible." wrong with democracy as we know it, so they replace it with something called participatory democracy. "That's just a change in the superstructure. They haven't even touched the social-economic base of the problem they are frying to tackle." What's meaningful? "You get a fair hold on the whole problem of meaning if you realize that nothing is meaningful in and of itself.

All things hang together. "But that game has to stop somewhere or you get into a rat's maze. You have to go to the origin of meaning, and for me, the origin of meaning for man must be found in man's commitment to go to Jesus Christ. "The Christian community, or at least a large part of it, no longer knows what that means. They have varied the real meaning in established institutions.

Orthodox Christianity is still stuck in the 19th Century." In a "radical, meaningful" analysis, why stop at Jesus Christ. "Because he puts himself to you as the be all and end all. By GORDON ARNOLD Herald Staff Writer "Do you have a cigarette? Good. Now, what we are trying to do is bring Christians together who are asking radical questions about Christ's life," the curly-haired, and bearded philosopher theologian says. He's Dr.

Hendrik Hart, a member of the Toronto-based Institute of Christian Studies, where "we give no credits, and we don't want anybody who's credit happy. We don't want to become an elite institution. We want to maintain contact with people." Dr. Hart was in Calgary last week as part of Discovery a program recently launched by the institute to maintain contact with people. Discovery I tackles family problems through a series of five lectures, making, Dr.

Hart hopes, the institute's work "serviceable to society." And there's no better way to serve the community than shaking up traditions that have "gotten he believes. a 1 i in contemporary parables, Dr. Hart outlines some of his beliefs, and the procedures used to arrive at BROTHERS BECOME MISSIONARIES.
