Well you can get an argument. Strange decisions crop up. In fairly recent years the wrong man has surely been hanged in one case.

Obviously innocent men have been sent to jail. In a couple of cases at present in the headlines, murder convictions are questioned. One of the accused went to the gallows. Two others are serving life. At lower levels there is a steady flow of peculiar decisions, many among the 20,000 unpaid and untutored magistrates who fill the benches of Britain's lower courts.

There are also some questions about the way the British police, generally supposed to lean over backward to make sure a prisoner gets a N. A. Boxal officiaimq. interment ko- ckyview Garden ot Peace. M9030 dear husband and father, George Cor- MORRIS August 14, 1971, Mrs.

M9010 BUJOIU August 14th, 1971, Mrs. Anna Bujoiu, aged 73 years, of 332 13th Street N.W Predeceased bv her ill; Within our hearts he liveth still. keeps getting scraped up, apparently pointing, if not to Hanratty's outright innocence, at least to his being found guilty on thin evidence. If the government ever acts, it will be too late to help Hanratty.

He was hanged in 1962. Another bungled capital case was that of Timothy Evans, who received the Queen's free pardon in 1966. For Evans this unfortunately also was too late. He was hanged in 1950 for a murder he obviously did not commit. Justice's magazine also has put the finger on several un-publicized cases and says the editors believe "there are more miscarriages of justice than there ought to be." WITNESS SIDETRACKED "In one murder case," it states, "a witness whose evidence might well have cleared the accused consulted the police after receiving a letter from the (defence) solicitor and was told that he should ignore it." The 1 a s' publication also says that "there is still a large number of cases in which convictions are based on identifications which are open to grave doubt." It tells of one former convict whom the police put on identification parade 13 times for offences committed in his neighborhood.

On the 13th, he was picked out by one witness Sadly missed by his wife Irene and Carmangay District with her parents in 1912. She was married there to Mr. George Morris, later movinq to the Cochrane District in 1941, where she was predeceased by her husband in 1962. Mrs. Morris was a member of the sixty and over club of Cochrane.

She is survived by tour sons, Cecil, Edmonton, David, Acme, Walter, Can- fair shake, may have cut corners in presenting cases to the courts. DISTURBING FLAWS The British section of the International Commission of Jurists, named Justice, picks some disturbing flaws in the legal system. It finds there are too many convictions on the basis of faulty identification, apparently abetted by police anxious to close a file. Justice also criticizes the haphazard way that arrested persons either are or are not sent to jail without bail before trial. The big current case involves a murder for which two men are doing life Britain now has no hanging in the killing of a slot-machine operative in an apparent power wrestle among the fraternity.

Angus Sibbett, with a firm supplying one-armed bandits to clubs in Britain's northeast, was found dead in his Jaguar in the Durham village of South Hetton in January, 1967. Sibbett had been taken for a ride and shot up. Who did it is what concerns many people in high places now. WRONGLY CONVICTED? Two men were convicted of murdering him. In retrospect, some think they were wrongly convicted and sentenced to life on shaky evidence.

There are suggestions of a neat and tidy frame-up by criminals, sons Fred and George. Lawyer David Napley, writing in the Journal of the Law Society, says he is convinced that at least Michael Luvag-lio, one of the two who drew life, is innocent. Napley acted for Luvaglio in an unsuccessful appeal. Geoffrey Rhodes, MP for Newcastle-upon-Tyne East, has written: "Many people who have made a close study of the case are convinced that Luvaglio and (Dennis) Stafford (the other convicted man) did not do it. Fifty MPs have urged me to try to get the case reopened because they suspect that a miscarriage of justice has taken place." Lord Russell of Liverpool, a distinguished lawyer, has virtually devoted his retirement to reopening the case of James Hanratty. another man whom British justice may or may not catch up.

Hanratty was convicted nine years ago in what has become famous as the "A6 murder" from the name of a highway alongside which a man was shot to death and his mistress wounded. Another man confessed to the murder and then retracted the confession. The government has persistently refused to reopen the case, though new evidence 40c. single cards.
