University 'turns on' Chamber Ensemble Stravinsky-haters THEATRE AND ENTERTAINMENT 1WD Ross Camnriell anrt Hnnhlp- PAGE 64 THURSDAY, MARCH 18, 1971 Frances Hyland now in Calgary awarded Senior Artist Grant By Jamie Portman (Herald Start Writerl One of the nice things about the University of Calgary's music department is that it offers public performances of works which we in Calgary all too rarely have the opportunity to hear. Consider, for example, Wednesday night's Festival '71 offering in the University Theatre. It was a chamber evening an evening devoted to two major works by Stravinsky. One of them was The Soldier's Tale a work both gripping and enjoyable and guaranteed to turn on even those people who profess to hate Stravinsky. It was the suite we heard last night, rewardingly performed by the University Chamber Ensemble conducted by Ward Cole.

It could, I suppose, be termed program music, but it is program music of a quite uncommon nature. Before the performance began, Dr. Cole obliged with a brief introduction to the suite and a synopsis of the dramatic narrative which it depicts. But really, this music almost speaks for itself. WARRING QUALITIES The ensemble's performance brought out the warrine Alan Scarfe in Theatre Cal-gary's production- of The Father.

She would like to study regional theatre in Scandinavia and commented, "I want to examine what their problems are, what their solutions are, and what, from these observ ations, can aid Canadian regional theatres." She has also won the Service Medal for the Order of Canada for work in theatres and hopes to spend time observing and studying theatres in England. Actor and director Frances Hyland has recently been awarded a Senior Artist Grant from the Canada Council for her work in regional theatres. Miss Hyland, who comes from Southern Saskatchewan, is currently co-starring with COMING TO qualities of the music it's unerring sense of the grotesque and its bold lyrical effects, its capacity for the sublime and for the deliberately ridiculous. Since the ensemble qualify of this performance was so good, every musician merits a bouquet and a mention. And the biggest bouquet of all is due to Use Elson for the marvels she achieved in the demanding violin passages. SOLID CONTRASTS It was a performance with verve, rhythmic drive and solid contrasts There were some delightful moments of musical parody, particularly in the raucous royal march and in the enthusiastic contribution made by Mr.

Mirtle on the trumpet. Dr. Finn on the clarinet and Prof. West on the trombone. Also worthy of special note was the expansive, all-encompassing effect achieved in the performance of the chorale.

The concert was a brief one. The audience was small, numbering perhaps 100 and this was unfortunate in view of the generally good qualify of the evening. Prior to intermission, the University Chamber Players and their conductor, Quenten Doolittle, took the stage for a highly creditable and disciplined performance of Stravinsky's Basle Concerto. Neo-classical in concept, rich in its imaginative exploration of the concerto grosso form, it required and received a disciplined response from the young musicians. There were, in particular, some excellent contrapuntal passages.
