Preliminary estimates show 5,255,000 tons of newsprint going to the United States in 1962 compared with an expected 5,400,000 in 1963; To Central America 155,000 tons in 1962 compared with 000 in 1963; South America 000 tons compared with The Far East 155,000 tons compared with 140,000 and Brit ain 500,000 this year compared with 485,000 for the coming year. txports to Western Europe should remain at 10,000 tons. BIGGEST PRODUCER Not only is Canada the biggest producer of newsprint in the world exporting 7,034,058 tons last year, she is also one of the biggest consumers.

The Canadian consumption of newsprint no-v totals more than 500,000 tons a year, an amount exceeded only by the United States, Britain, Japan, West Germany, France and possibly Russia. The long-range picture for the industry also seems fairly bright, on the basis of an association chart illustrating a 35-year history of capacity and demand. The chart discloses a "tremendous increase in both demand and capacity in the last 15 years which seems likely to continue." What about trade with Communist countries? The association sees a greater demand for newsprint in these countries, due to "a high degre of literacy and a steadily rising standard of living" However, it says available foreign exchange will be used more for paper-making equip ment than for buying newsprint. From Page 25 Cummer learned the idiosyncrasies of all the aldermen. He has also learned not to take down verbatim motions made in council.

"We have to interpret. I think sometimes the aldermen would be surprised if we recorded their rnoiioro verbatim. The idea is to get the thought behind the motion and the feeling of council." "But we almost have to be of court reporter calibre to do the job we're expected to do." Outside council chambers Mr. Cummer has done another form of interpreting job sorting out people's problems and sending them to the right official. "Usually when people don't know who to see, thev start here and we steer them in the right direction." WHEN HE leaves the city clerk's office today he plans "to have a little fun.

There hasn't been much time for that." But in his spare time he'll still serve the city in an unofficial capacity, properly indexing old city records so facts will be at the fingertips of the office staff. "I've wanted to do that for years but I haven't had the time." Mr. Cummer became city clerk in 1955, after 11 years as assistant city clerk. He is being succeeded by present assistant, Harry Sales.
