4 -f iff Ecology Center ieI A mm ougl, Aims to Preserve Alley Park fate i I iry' 'ill By ROBERT LANE Over 200 years ago, Alley Pond was formed when a miller, James Hedges, dammed the small, spring-fed Alley Creek. Over the weekend, a new dam of sorts was opened in the park to harness and preserve another natural resource the environment. Built of the hard work, dedication and commitment of men and women which make such projects last, the "new dam" known as the Alley Pond Environ-menteal Center, will serve as the focal point of citywide and community interest in protecting this ecological sanctuary in the northeast of the borough. "This is the reality of years of dreams by hundreds of local people who want to see this area saved," said Mike Alberts, president of the three-, year-old organization which will run the newv center at 228-06 Northern Douglaston. History of Organization Last Sunday, Alberts and members of the organization hosted a reception of community people, local politicians and Parks Commissioner Martin Lang for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official opening of the non-profit center which has a history as interesting as the exhibits on display throughout the former patio shop it occupies.

On hand for the event were two former Whitestone residents, Hy and Joan Rosner, who in 1972, along with a group of educators, guided an official of the Parks Department on a nature walk through Alley Park. By the end of that walk, it had been agreed that the park's tremendous educational potential should be developed that the trail around the pond should be rehabilitated and a park warden assigned to develop educational programs. That was the beginning of the environmental enter. Shortly after, a small storage room in the park was converted into a temporary office and by January 1973, it was staffed on weekends by center volunteers who attempted to give visitors a "hands-on" learning experience, to help them develop an appreciation of natural areas and an understanding of how they could be utilized constructively.

"We can't believe that the organization has been able to do so much in such a short time," said Rosner. He said his wife flew in for the ceremonies from their retirement home in Albuquerque. "It's beyond anything we could have hoped for or imagined," said Mrs. Rosner. City Depends on Vols Lang said the Parks Department, which leases the building to the group for $1 annually, would like to see more environmental groups established throughout the city.

"With city money as tight as it is," said Lang," we depend on this kind of volunteerism and interest to keep all of our parks and recreational areas from deteriorating." In addition to its continuing interest in preserving Alley Park, the center plans to expand its already widespread program of working with community and school groups to, as Alberts put it, "spread our concern for the environment throughout the city."
