(AP) Clarence D. Chamberlin, 83, the first American pilot to fly a passenger across the Atlantic Ocean, died Saturday after a long illness. On June 4, 1927, two weeks after Charles Lindbergh landed in Paris after his historic solo flight, Chamberlin set out for Europe with Charles A. Levine, a New York businessman, as passenger. Chamberlin was aiming for Berlin, but fuel ran out 100 miles short of his goal and he landed the little plane in Eisleben, Germany, on June 5.
