It was the first time in history that a miler has been able to break through the legendary four-minute barrier. As can be seen on the large hand of the clock, Bannister beat the four-minute mark by six-tenths of a second.

Two officials held him erect as he regained his breath. Then came the announcement of the great time. Bannister quickly rushed over to Chataway and Brasher and embraced them. Then the three jogged across the infield. Bannister towering over his friends.

It had rained rather heavily during the day and a strong wind had whipped the field But less than half an hour before the rare time the sun came out and a rainbow showed in the sky. It was a good luck omen for Bannister. Brasher said he thought he had taken the first lap too quickly.

Roger Bannister, in the midst of his track comeback last year, ran a 4:02 mile to tie the third best previous time ever run. best performance was a 4:02 last year, and Landy also had a 4:02.1 in 19.i2.

Andersson was clocked at 4:02.2 while finishing second to Haegg in the former record race. Andersson also turned in a 4:02.6 time in 1943. Best American ever recorded in the mile was a 4:02.4 by Wes Santee of Kansas in the Compton. Calif. Relays last May.

Both Santee and Landy were rated ahead of Bannister in their chances of running the mythical four-minute mile. other best times were 4:02.4 and 4:02.6, both made this year, and 4:02.8, made last year. The only other miler in the world ever to break 4:03 is Gaston Reiff of Belgium, who in 1952 ran a 4:02.8. Reiff is the world record- holder in the two-mile run with 8:40.8. Perhaps an even faster mile than Bannister's 3:39.4 effort Thursday will be run in the British Empire Games at Vancouver, Canada, beginning July 30, when Bannister.

American George Dole, running for Oxford, was far back athletic quest for the four-minute mile with a monumental in which he was timed at 3:59.4. Competing in his first race of the year, and on his own track at Iffley Road, the shy former Oxonian burst through the legendary four- minute barrier as a meager crowd of 1.000, mostly Oxford students, matched the memorable performance during which he drove him- mercilessjy through a :58.9 final lap.

Thus he thrust into the dust bin of sports history' the world record mark 4:01.4 established July 18, 1945, at Malmo, Sweden, by the the world mark of 3:43 en route to his mile mark. Bannister was pulled along through the first three laps by a fellow Oxonian. Chris Chataway. and a former Cambridge steeplechaser, Chris Brasher. He kept on heels for the first two laps, and when away rushed into the lead Bannister stayed with him through the third lap.

Luwty Cheer at Three-Quarter Mark He was clocked at :57.5 for the quarter and 1:58.2 for the half. When he passed the three-quarter mark in 3:00.5 the hanejful of spectators seated in the small pavilion and scattered about the field gave a lusty cheer. The great runner bided his time until about 300 yards from the tape, when he urged himself to a supreme effort. With a machinelike, seemingly effortless stride, he drew steadily away from way, and, head thrown back slightly, he breasted the cool, stiff wind on the last turn to come driving down the home stretch to climax his spectacular performance. Before tremendous record can become official it must be approved by International Amateur Athletic Federation, but chances appeared good as the meet was an official one and the race was run under standard conditions.

all. Begins. He never finishes a race because his getaway looks good enough. And he won't dance the two- itep because the one-step seems plenty. He uses a burst of newspaper advertising to introduce a product then sits back complacently while his sales slow down to a walk.

Fortunately the standing pat is a rare creature. Most wise manufacturers who gain one cess realize that continued use of nwspaperi will produce more of the same. They realize that introducing is an ever-continuing process. Which is why newspaper advertising, a local power, has become a regular national habit among national advertisers. No wonder national advertising in newspapers last year showed a 12.8% gain over the year before! All business is local and so are all newspapers!
