Faiella is a forceful young: lady who, for several years, has been outfitting a pair of Manhattan's grreat mansions with exactly the right kind of music. Faiella is a hard-wrkin? soprano, also an impresario, a publicity woman, and the originator of a very unusual musical organization: L'Ensemble. Her musicians include some of the top instrumentalists in the city and she has a knack for coaxing stars into working for uns tarry salaries, and for wheedling money oat of banks and business establishments. "We're on the East Side," she explains, "and outside of the Met Museum and the 92nd St. YMHA, there's not much music around here. The huge mansions, reekinsr of money and luxurious good taste, provide exactly the sort of atmosphere one might have encountered if one had been buddy-buddy with Prince Esterhazy or Otto Kahn and they'd invited you up for champagne and sonatas. "We started doing this." says Faiella, "because we had nothing else to do. My friends and I came to New York with all that energy and zest and training that everybody comes here with, and we found there was no place to do the thing we'd been training to do: make music I saw them selling shoes and acting as tour guides, getting deep into things that didn't allow them to think about their music "I decided to find another way. I started teaching music at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, training a choir, organizing tours for them. Then I began looking for ways to make music alive for the kids.

I said, lefs study baroque music, then well talk about it, then well DO IT! I called all my musician friends and told them to come over and play a concert. Soon the kids were just climbing the walls to take the course. "They were understanding music, having a direct dialogue with the players. Kids came from other schools, then faculty members, then parents. So we decided to go public The school owned those two mansions, rococo Burden place and the Renaissance palace of Otto Kahn.
