Just before the period closed both teams passed on every down but all of them went wild or were knocked down by the secondary defense There was not much to this quarter but we are giving it to the of the saddest days in the 56 years of Michitgan football history for the Maize and Blue Combined with 40 0 rout of Michigan last week mas sacre plunged the Wolverines to the lowest gridiron depths ever experi enced by them Never before has a Michigan team been beaten by such top heavy scores on successive Saturdays Michigan was pitiful before the merciless attack of the Buckeyes which kept the Wolverines almost on their own goal line all day Only once was Michigan in scoring posi tion and that was in the first minute of play after recovering an Ohio State fumble on the Buckeye's 19 yard line Michigan invaded Ohio State only once under its own power reaching the 41 yard line on passes in the third period only to lose the ball on a fumble Riddle Michigan Defen Ohio State using all the gridiron magic for which Coach rancis Schmidt is famous riddled the Michi gan defense for a total of 447 yards 295 yards on running plays and 152 yards on passes The Buckeyes had two touchdowns called back because of penalties and squandered half a dozen other scoring opportunities in one way and another Ohio State's first touchdown cli maxed a 30 yard march with Dick Heekin plunging over the 2 over his shoulder for the third Yog score That was all there was to the first half from a scoring point It had produced four touchdowns It pro duced a number of sensational gains after the fourth player shine in better manner in smashing defeat We dare say that Bill Wallace played the greatest game of his career this afternoon He was a demon on the defense a raging speeding offen sive sensation He had the drive of a locomotive The manner in which he stayed on his feet as he drove through tacklers was a reve lation to the 20000 present They could do naught but admire the gameness and the remarkable ability of this star from Eagle Lake or take Sam Baugh but then you can't take hiih wont let you We can take him let him matriculate at Baylor and make of the Bears a conference champion in one short year that is if we could get him If we had our way about it we would trade you a football army for Sam Baugh He's the greatest passer that ever lived He is the greatest football player alive today We thought he was a honey when we saw him against Baylor We thought him a marvel when he went to the box against Texas for that's what he is a baseball pitcher with a football Instead of a baseball but we seen a thing until we saw him to day He was a marvel of effi ciency He made the Rice defense look even worse than the Baylor de fense and Texas defense against passes It seems that any kind of opposition is just a work for that young man and an easy two hour day at that He is the nearest thing to perfection that we have ever witnessed on a gridiron It was a great game today until he started passing just as it was a great game until he started passing against tne Bears horns then it was Plenty of Help Sammv had more he has had before this season Jim my Lawrence who has always starred against Rice did not fail to today He was a tower of strength ali the way a sensation from start to finish Next to Baugh and Wal lace he was the field With his bruising runs and terrific power he tore the Rice line to snreas He Owls when he had the ball a half dozen to bring him down As this game started the writer had a severe headache Not less than 20 seconds later 2000 fans who had made the long trip from Houston to ort Worth for the game had a more severe headache for it took the rogs exactly that long to the first score JL Steyer Gets Honor Th play of one youngster there today was quite a surprise to every inhabitant of the crowded press box The greatest end on the field was not the heralded Roach the brilliant Walls or the consistent Sylvester The honors went to your old friend Meyer Waco boy and nephew of Dutch Meyer the coach of the team He was sent in as a substitute The fact that he is a nephew of the coach is prob ably the reason he is a substitute or the day he was an all confer ence wing There was 'not an end in his class on the field He gave the greatest exhibition of end play that We have gazed on this season His snatching of passes was re markable but it was his defensive play that made him the star that he was He went under the thunder ing Rice interference to get the ball carrier He raced from behind to get him He played in the nice backfield all afternoon He was 165 pounds of football dynamita that ex ploded with practically every play put on today Even the marvelous powerful Darrell Lester played no better game than did young Meyer today and Lester was his customary all America self Rice had tha kind of offense 1Vnl it expected to have this afternoon It made 20 first downs and 20 first downs are quite enough to defeat most of the fine teams of the land but 20 first downs were not enough to cause elevation of an eyebrow on the part ot the rogs today They did so much more with 16 first downs that the Owls had about as much chance as a dead leaf in a cyclone An Amazing Start The battle started in most amazing manner Dutch Kline took the open ing kickoff darted out in daring fashion gained momentum knew what he was talking about The Baylor line outfought and out charged the forward wall for the entire first half and most of the third quarter Every time th Ponies got the ball they looked up to find Earl Wray John Rey nolds Buchanan or Simpson waiting there to throw them for a loss They lost plenty of yardage for the day On two or three occasion the backs were tosed for 10 or 12 yard from would be difficult indeed to name an outstanding star in the Bay lor line Thera was Earl Wray who has been a substitute most of the year crashing In to break ud reverses and straight away power plays There was John Reynold st center He tore through th Pony interference and blockers with the power ot a steam engine and cracked them with jarring tackles There wa Shuford McDonald another sub stitute who went into the game at tackle' and played as he never has been known to play before There bhortstacR Buchanan at guard who has plaved in brilliant manner all season There were Ken Clark John Williams Suitcase Simpson and three or four others Bochey Koch put a line on the field today which all but whipped the mighty Red and Blue forward wall's ear down It was a tough game for Baylor to lose and was not i line's fault Carl Brazell shared the glory of the day with the linemenH backed up the front in magnifi cent style He tore through Into the Pony backfield went back rushed forward roamed to th right and to the left to have a part in every play Demon on Defen Bubba Gernand and Bob Masters at halfbacks were defensive demons Lloyd Rusaell was a star at the safety position both offensively and defensively The Bears did what nobody else has been able to do this season with any degree of success: shackle the greatest running back in the coun Bob Wilson Ot course he broke loose for several nice runs but on the whole he was smothered like all the rest of the Mustang backs He was thrown for one or two losses of at least 10 yards and stopped at the line of scrimmage time after time The game is a tribute to the splendid coaching abil ity of Morley Jennings He had his boys playing their hearts out They had been doped to Jose by at least three touchdowns did not use their second string to de feat the Bears as they did Texas and one or two other conference op ponents They had to leave their first string in there most ot the time Gernand Masters and Russell did some nice work on the offense for me tsears Gernand had a world of drive as did Masters Russell tore into the Mustang line with all the force he could muster and it often carried him for substantial gains He got off several nice punts Hi passes were wild but he was rushed off his feet most of the time Orr Lead Mustang Wall Maurice Orr 220 pound tackle of the Mustangs led the Ponv fowrard wall in halting gain a yard over his position for the afternoon Jack Rabbit Smith was a star from whistle to shot in the Pony back field He plunged the line and ran th ends in sensational style He snatched the pass which made the Mustangs' victory secure although it was probably not needed Crr's to was all the Mustangs had to have to win After he booted his field goal they became a different ball club Bobby Wilson turned the tide for the Mustangs about four or five plays before the end of the third quarter The Ponies had punt ed to the Bruin 10 yard line Lloyd Russell had wriggled back up to the 20 Two
