Freights are plenty for the Missouri, principally for points not farther west than St. Joseph, consisting In good part of merchandise for the territories.

The growth of sorghum In this section of the State Is very large this year, and the product of syrup will probably equal that of former years, though the breadth planted was less than usual. There are some quite ex-itenslve fields In this county. Hon. 8. J.

Hi Snyder has a field of twelve acres, near Monrovia. It will yield from two to three hundred gellnns to the acre. It Is one of the most encouraging signs of peace and prosperity to see the revival of Interest In State and County agricultural fairs. It Is to be regretted that the Kansas State Agricultural Society omitted to hold a fair this fall. The numerous local fairs In the State, however, will compensatesorae for the omission.1 The Atchison fair promises to be quite a general exhibition.

We saw at Alderson'S this morning a fine copy of the New Testament for the blind ono of those works of Christian benevolence and charity through which the American B.hle Foclety is dispensing the gospel to every human being In the land. This copy has been procured by Mr. T. B. Davis, late a soldier ofthe-' 18th regiment, as a present to a blind girl In thls-city.

If that Orgpn and head-stack don't get p'ayed out of or toppled down in Missouri, we are vey much mis taken 5 We received a call to-day fromMr.C.W, Troy, Agent of the Hannibal St.

Joseph Itallroad. Mr. Troy has been visiting the cities of Kansas, making observations in the interest of the line of roads he represents. He is a shrewd observer of things, and will no doubt make a valuable report. The IT.

St. Joe road is now In better order than It has been for years before. A force of some 800 hands are constantly at work repairing the grade and renew ing the track. Eight new engines arc being built at tho company's works at Hannibal, besides a large number of new passenger cars, The City Council has passed a very stringent ordinance relating to gambling. That is right.

Let It now be enforced. Let the concern to which we alluded last week anil all other such places he now dried up, and let all persons who, in the language of the ordinance, "not having visible means to maintain themselves, live Idly or are found loitering or rambling out-houses, bawdy-houses or houses notoriously reputed to bo gam. bling-places, and places of resort for gamblers," be Arrested, tried, convicted and fined let their occupation be taken from them, and they be compelled to go to work for a livelihood at some honest employment, or he compelled to emigrate to some more congenial clime. We learn that Messrs. Biley 4 Blum, of 3t.

Joe, have been declared the successful bidders for the work of macadamizing the roa through the Kansas the river and Wathena, and that tho contract will be made in a day or two, and the work conimsnced at once. Messrs. Riley A Blum take the contract at or $9,400 per mile. They also agree to take the bonds Issued by the city of St. Joe, under the appropriation made, at par.

The city appropriation being a balance of al out $15,000 will have to be raised by Individual subscriptions. Of this amount citizens of Doniphan county are expected to contribute a fair portioh. So says the Herald, at St. Joe. Business Cards.
