Ron will tell you as you wander, wide-eyed, between the displays of life-like rubber masks, a i i a top a a a tasteless license plates and risque party jokes. Ron a is the proprietor of Ron's Trick Shop, located at 311 Prince St. in downtown Beckley, in that row of narrow shops labeled Prince Village.

i I a a shock, fascinate or even offend you, taut it's difficult to be bored by them. Ron says' his shop is the only one of its kind in the state. i a Is the big sales season'for most retail stores; for Ron, naturally, it's Halloween. Want to be a simian from Planet of the Apes? No problem, as Ron quickly demonstrated (see photo). The stock of masks isn't really complete yet, Ron explained as he opened a catalog.

With the help of the masks offered, one could be any of a number of famous movie monsters, or even an a a i realistic Captain Kirk or Mr. Spock, right off the U.S.S. Enterprise. Although he doesn't perform much anymore, Ron Is a magician in his own right. Since 1964, he has one of six West Virginians who belong to I a i a Brotherhood of Magicians.

Using a special deck of playing cards, Ron quickly whipped off about three different versions of the old "pick a card, any card" routine. With hands quicker than the eye. as I hey say. Ron deftly chose the card from the deck every time. Then he showed how it's done.

Readers won't know I he secret because a I a i a pointment. It lakes some of the --well, magic--out of it. Ron said he spends most of his lime managing the shop and booking olhcr a i i a mances, rather than perform himself. On top of one diplay counter is a collect i of of a a a about any contemporary magician you could name, including one from Ihe well known superstar Doug Henning. Ron got Into magic from the most unlikely field imaginable.

He was working in Chicago as the assislanl manager of a firm that manufactures lead radiation shielding. Why did Ron leave a solid, down to earth vocation like that for magic? "I don't know," he succinctly explains. If you're over 21 years old. Ron will escort you to Ihe rear of the building, to the infamous "21 Room." H.Isn't the raunchy kind of stuff you'd find in a big- city "marital aids" shop. Most of it can be described as.

well, tasteless: the kind of stuff you might give a friend on his birthday as a joke, but not things you'd want seen around your living room. There's Ihe usual selection of girlie playing cards, i i a a jigsaw puzzles. For $2.50 a a nographic connect the dots book or a selection of dirty crossword puzzles. There's even one of Ihose ring-for-assistanee bells that's shaped just like a -ah, well, you'll just have lo go see for yourself. We walked back out inlo I i tasleless front rooni and over to some small cages.

"These are called Polish Rabbits," Ron said, lifting one oat of the cage for me lo inspect. "They don't get any bigger than 3 "i to 4 pounds. They're ideal, for pulling out of hats, stuff like that." He was paroled but couldn't adjust to life outside, so returned voluntarily. Now, he his wish.

He can stay in prison. Grigsby is credited with the longest imprisonment in modern times, and he isn't worried whether or not he will spend the rest of his life behind bars. Grigsby was convicted in 1908 of killing a man during a tavern brawl at son, Ind. Jess Gravely, a 57 year old country boy who still lives on Ihe same farm in Sullivan where lie was reared, Is also ihc West Virginia Department of Highways (WVDOH) supervisor at the construction site of the world's longest steel arch bridge, the New River Gorge Bridge. How does he feel, being the project supervisor of a $34 million tourist attraction? "I never i about it like that," said Gravely, a tall, thin man with an abundance of red hair.

"It's my job. Of course. I wanted this project, but I didn't expect that it would be offered to me." Although Gravely has been supervising this project since construction began in July 1973, he has been a WVDOH employe for 18 years. ''Originally I was a mining engineer," he explained. "But when the mines started shutting back about 20 years ago, I applied for a job with the department of highways and got it.

I found it lo be much more interesting than the mines," he said, "so I just stayed with it." Since that time Gravely has worked a variety of construction jobs in several State Highway Department districts; jobs which have Included assisting with the tunnel at East River Mountain and many new construction jobs in the district three area around Parkersburg. Now Gravely spends about half his time in the project trailer keeping up with all the paperwork involved in the New River Gorge Bridge poject, and the other half, he spends out on the construction site making sure everything is on schedule. So far, the Appalachian.Corridor project has gone smoothly, although there have been a few problems, including the collapse of one of the erection lowers. "If there were no problems," Gravely said, "there would be no point in my being here." He Is also quick to point out that he is just one of many people employed by the WVDOH and the contractor at the bridge site. Total employment, according to the highway department, Is about 70.

"There are an a lot of people involved in construction of this bridge besides me," said Gravely. "If there weren't other people to consult, it would scare me to death! "I was somewhat apprehensive when I first stood looking across the gorge and knew we were going to build a bridge," he added, "but we're far enough along now that I have confidence." Both Gravely and his assistant, Don Plumley, are amused at all the people who flock to see the bridge. They joke that they would like to have a nickel for every roll of film people have shot taking pictures of the span. "People can't help but at the bridge," Gravely said. "I am myself lo some extent, amazed and I see the bridge every day." The bridge is scheduled for completion late next year.

Jess Gravely will then be assigned to another highway construction project. He doesn't think that working on Ihe New River Gorge Bridge will make his future projects anticlimatic. "In all of the 18 years that I've worked for the Department of Highways," he recalled, "there's never been a dull moment."
