Am. 14, 1965 SANDUSKY REGISTER LOOK OUT, GIRLS Lads Try Cooking And Decorating By SUE HIVELY Register Women's Editor Among the 4-H'ers who will compete in the home improvement and quick foods division of the fair which begins today at the Erie County fairgrounds are two young men. THEY ARE Smith, of Mr. and Mrs. Don Smith of 1 ii Heiights; and Dave Dearth, son of Mr.

and Mrs. Stanley Dearth, 2811 Sunset Lane. STEVE recently painted his room and decided that he may as well get 4-H credit for the project, so he entered the home improvement compel tion. With a few suggestions from his mother and a lot of ideas from a catalog, Steve selected the accessories for his room. WHILE HE was still swinging a paint brush he painted another bedroom the basement, and two rooms in his grandparent's home.

By ABIGAIL VAN BUREN DEAR ABBY: The reason we do not visit our married son and his wife is because their lives are not regulated like ours, they don't realize it, and we are too old to change. When we older folks were young, by nine o'clock in the morning we had almost a half a day's work done. We've been early risers all our lives, which is a haibit not easily broken. My wife and I still get up at 5:30 in the morning. At home, we make a pot of coffee and sit around reading the newspapers until breakfast time, which is no Grists op dlstmctlow.

GIFTS for the BRIDE for rhe HOME Across from Plaza Shopping Center later than seven o'clock. When we visit our married children, we still wake up at the usual time, but hesitate to leave our bed until we hear the rest of the househol stirripg, which is nearly eight o'clock! My wife feel like going into her kiboh- en to make coffee, and by the time breakfast is served we are hungry enough to eat the mattress. Please print this so the younger people will give it some thought. CANADIAN DEAR CANADIAN: If you are unable to communicate this simple problem to your children, you are on much too formal terms with them. Your wife should ask for permission to maike herself at home in her daughter.in-law's kitchen.

(She'll gladly cooperate since the alternative is getting up earlier herself.) Or ask for a "survival kit" to stave off starvation until breaWast is served. DEAR ABBY: Our minister greets his congregation at the door with ihe limpest hand shake you oould ever imagine. In fact, he just sticks out hJs hand and lets other people shake it. It's, like grabbing hold of a dishrag. I once heard that a firm handshaice means sitrength of character, friendliness and honesty.

And a weak handshake means weakness of cbaraoter, un- friendliniesis and dishonesty. Is there anything to this? CURIOUS DEAR CURIOUS: No! Don't pass snap judgments on the strength of a handshake. Generalizations are dangerous. The man with the firmest grip could have more up his sleeve than a strong arm. But I agree, it is disappointing to get a wishy-washy handshake when one expects a firmer one.

HIS 4-H fair project received a grade of A-. Since his project was too unwieldy to take to the fair, Steve made a poster 1 i i the reasons he is studying home improvement: To learn about color; pattern; how to make things; refinish furniture; work with fabrics; correctly choose furniture and accessories; arranging furniture in a room; and keeping a room neat.

HOWEVER home improvement is destined to remain a hobby with the 16 year old Berlin Heights School junior. He wants to be an engineer or a mechanic. He likes to tear down and rebuild engines. Steve also studies money management hi 4-H. DAVE DEARTH, on the other hand, might continue his hobby as a career. An eighth grader at Perkins School, the 14 year old lad would like to be a chef In the Navy.

Dave who moved to Sandusky at mid-term this year, was introduced to cooking when his family lived in Findlay. In the Findlay Schools all boys must take one semester of home economics and all girls must take one semester of industrial arts. FOR THE past two years Dave has applied his skill to the outdoor cooking competition In 4-H. This year le has entered the quick foods division and will prepare a meal of ham, buttered com and Bavarian Creme for the judges. Dave's favorite subject in school Is history; and ne is also studying first aid in 4-H.

THE YOUNG man has not experimented with concocting his own recipes; but he shares with Register readers one of his favorite recipes, Applesauce Bars. Lorain. Sock Mop Stops Sour Sfrings DEAR FOLKS: There are mops, mops and mops! But, since we have to mop it's real nice to find one that will not lose strings, sour, or wear out in a short period of time. But where are you going to find one? Make your own if you have (or can find) and old, oil-mop and out off all the old strings. The reason I say oil is that these usually have a metal band on which the strings are held. Tie aill your old, runny nylon stocks fast to this band of metal along about the knee of the stocking.

After you have knotted or tied a batch of them, cut them off to a uniform length with your scissors making the mop strings as look your best for Back-To-School from the HOUSE OF BEAUTY 1821 Hgyes Ave. 626-0867 long or as short as you want them.
