This tournament will rtoi be a National Golden Gloves qualifying tournament, it is a non-advancing tournament. CHECK WEIGHT: THIS IS NO time to be looking back and not because, as Satchel Paige used to warn, "Something might be gaining on you." This is no time to be looking back because, in a word, boxing in 1999 "stunk." This was to be the year of revival. The heavyweight championship was to be unified, Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad Jr. were going to have their showdown, the Muhammad Ali Bill was going to save boxing. Bah, humbug.

It took two dull fights for Lennox Lewis to prove there's no strength in unity. It took three cowardly rounds by The Chicken to restore his nickname. Mike Tyson didn't bite, but he tried to break Frans Botha's arm and hit Orlin Norris after the bell. No one's perfect. Roy Jones Jr.

Said Laila Ali's promoter, Mike Acri: "This is getting to be a freak show, just because their last names are Ali and Frazier." Heavy wait: Tyson took quick break training in Miami, but not to get closer to Lennox Lewis, who's also there. Tyson "looked spectacular" reported adviser Shelly Finkel yesterday. Finkel said Tyson wanted break from Vegas and will return there next week to train for Jan. 29 bout with Julius Francis, who conveniently becomes WBC No. 12.

Feds, instead of running IBF, should be more interested in shutting WBC and WBA. Here's more evidence: Henry Akinwande still WBA mandatory for Lewis. Huggin' Henry, once DQ'd for holding Lewis, was to have appeared on Don King holiday card in Tunica, last weekend Austin, Ray Mercer and Oliver McCall scored KOs in total of under five minutes but busted lip prevented his appearance against ex-wrestler Tony Halme, who few years ago campaigned as "Ludwig Borga" while having WWF feud with "Lex Luger." Huggin' Henry would have taught him new holds. WBC ranks unbeaten Derrick Jefferson 27th among heavyweights right behind Tim Puller. Andrew Golota survived crash with semi on 1-80 after losing control in snow in Davenport, Iowa, but while physically okay, Golota is more depressed than usual because buddy riding with him was killed.

Just in case: Bob Arum was checking on availability of unbeaten Australian welterweight slugger Shannan Taylor in case Derrell Coley is forced to withdraw from Feb. 26 match with De La Hoya. Roy Jones apparently not taking David Telesco too seriously he's shooting movie in Houston while training for Jan. 15 date at Radio City Music Hall, which already is more than half sold-out. A tip: Rockefellers used to sit in center of first mezzanine, where boxing tix are only $100.

Brooklyn's Zab Judah fights for vacant IBF junior welter title Feb. 12 at Mohegan Sun against Jan Bergmann. Terronn Millett relinquished title because he'll be out at least four months with broken hand. When he's back, he'll become No. 1.

Junior Jones gets shot at Na-seem Hamed on HBO March 11, probably in London. zier). He gets my vote as fighter of the year, partly out of consideration for past achievements and partly because no one else deserves it. It was a year with investigations into rotten decisions and indictments for bribery. The Ali Bill gave in to the promoters and allowed up to five options on fighters. Bill Clinton rejected it, if for other reasons.

It was a year of greed, even by fighters. Suddenly, Floyd Mayweather Jr. thinks he's worth $3 million a fight and he fires his father for disagreeing. There were the usual tragedies. Stephen Johnson's may not be over.

His mother has contacted Johnnie Cochran. The state of Washington allowed a woman to fight a man. She won, then moved up in class and beat another woman.
