FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 1952 BLVTHEVIL1B (ARK.) COURIER NEWS Preacher Builds Church CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—A hosiery mill worker-turned Church of God preacher — has become something of a 20th cenlury Johnny Appleseed who plants churches. When John D. Smith heard (he call to preach seven years ago, he had no 'church and no congregation. With 10 friends who formed his original Hock, he set out to build his own church. Friends in Construction Business Some of the friends hud con- ncclions in the construction busi- less. They were invaluable in the fjuiklinff of a stone structure "which was named the Alton Paris (Chrutanooga) Church of God. Smith, who never hefore laid a stone, was on the job every day as a laborer. The new preacher's sermons and spirit attracted followers rapidly. But when the congregation had grown to 351 members, Ihree years aso, Smiili set out for new fields. He chose the nearby Kast Ridge- district, where he had been born. Smith borrowed money to buy a lot. A short time later he was of- lered a $000 profit for the property. He sold it and bought several lots. Started Prcarhins In Ton! Ai»ain without a congregalion, he erected a tent and held Sunday meetings, working weekdays on the foundation of his church. He had never laid a brick bul one of his new followers gave him lessons. Soon he was workinR laic into Ihe nighl.
