Well plenty of condidates are out on the Baylor campus eager for the start of spring training Tuesday aft ernoon but unfortunately for the Baylor cause most of them either are inex perienced or have big question marks before their names Coach George Sauer left and line coach Jack Russell look over a list of some of the prospects in picture above as final plans were mapped Saturday for the start PARSLEY GREEN TOP HOPES Bear Spring Drills to Center On Hunt for Tackle Help By DAVE CAMPBELL ON SECOND THOUGHT By DAVE CAMPBELL Tribune Herald Sports Editor Only the stout of heartthose free of all superstitions need apply for the right tackle job at Baylor University almost afraid to assign anybody there admitted coach George Sauer Saturday as he contemplated the future and sadly reviewed the past vears ago we had Robert Knowles and Clyde Letbetter at right tackle Knowles missed the last half of the season with a wrenched knee and Letbetter was called into military service year we had Bill Green and Dave Lunceford Green twisted a knee after the Washington game and had to have an operation and Lunceford busted out leaves us back where we account points up the run of bad luck Baylor has been having at the vital tackle posi tions since the return to one pla toon football In addition to the troubles mentioned above left tackle James Ray Smith in 1953 missed the Houston game because of injuries and last season missed three contests because of ailments With normal luck Baylor would have Lunceford Green and Let better back for 1955 warfare Each would be a senior presumably at the peak of effectiveness Instead only Green is on the scene and he still must test a knee repaired by a December operation Centers May Be It may be that converted cen ters will ultimately provide the answer to the tackle problems Sauer already has announced Bill Glass top pivot man in the late stages of the 1S54 campaign will switch to tackle for at least the spring session If Waco High product Lee Har rington develops as expected at center big and talented Iarry Cowart may also g' to tackle Cowart a San Antonio product excellent as a Cub last fall Harrington is rated highly be cause of his offensive talents and his tremendous desire Harrington we have had a chance in the Rice says frosh coach Bob Barfield In 1947 Texas University faced a similar problem at tackle and used' a similar approach Dick Harris for two years all conference at cen ter moved over to tackle and Tackle Solution maintained his all star ranking there In 1918 he moved back to the pivot spot and won all confer starting center next fall provided Glass stays at tackle NIilljr is recog nized as a ranking candidate for the starting right guard position Miller and Taylor will remain on probation until the end of the pres ent school year Sauer recently wanted us grid dors that training rule violations of any kind in the future will mean instant dismissal from 1he squad and forfeiture of athletic scholar ship No explanations need be of fered Weldon Holley Weldon Holley will provide in surance for the Bears at all three of the deep positions in the back field next season An accomplished defensive man good pass receiver and runner he will learn the assignments tor both right and left halfback and full back With Holley looming as the fifth man in the backfield plugging the dikes where needed the 1955 just as fast He too must improve on defense Pelton's forte is defense' He could become the best guard on Insurance Man the team Of all the newcomers he may have the best chance of winning a starling berth in 1955 Anderson'' best end in the frosh circuit is being touted as another Stan Williams Only Henry Grcm minger stands between Anderson and a starting role now but that of course is stiff competition Doyle Traylor eliminated from 1954 competition even before the season began declares his injured shoulder has completely mended Next to lackle Sauer considers the quarterback position as Bay top headache Traylor still must prove he is physically equipped for the tough wear and tear of the conference grind Robby Jones soph sensation of lat it Sep tember must learn to throw the short pass must improve his ball handling and foot work and must polish' his defensive skills before he can expect regular use All the other quarterback candidates arc sophs to be untested and inexperi
