"The ocean broke through the beach, leveled houses in its path and created new inlets from the ocean to the bay," Mayor George Nebel said. Dozens of homes reduced to rubble BY CAITLIN STOLZENTHALER THE OCEAN STAR MANTOLOKING The small seaside town, here, is unrecognizable in the wake of Sandy this week, as homes have been decimated, sand has caked Route 35 and the ocean meets the bay in two new spots on the barrier island. After Hurricane Sandy ripped through the area earlier this week, the borough is devastated. Point Beach takes beating BY COLLEEN KING THE OCEAN STAR POINT PLEASANT BEACH The boardwalk, here, has been a topic of conversation for years good and bad but but the utter destruction of the iconic barrier that lined the edge of this shore community for decades is a conversation no one wanted to have. The brand-new boardwalk, just replaced following damage from Hurricane Irene last year, was completely ripped from its pilings, pieces of twisted metal and boards left in its place.
