Monday Afternoon, June 11, 1973 District 29 President Pledges Support For BLA United Mine Workers of America District 29 president Levi Daniel told the crowd of around 80 persons at the Thursday meeting of the Beckley Black Lung Association that the union is "behind you are Eustice 100 per cent." "You are a part of us," Daniel told participants in the meeting, held in the conference room at the Raleigh County Community Action Association. Daniel urged formation of a three-member committee to work with similar committees from Kentucky, Virginia, and other parts of West Virginia concerned with the number of applicants whose Black Lung claims have been turned down, and the number of claims which have not been acted on. The committees will try to get government representatives to come to the coalfields for meetings to discuss the problems, Daniel said. The group voted unanimously to send a letter to the Social Security Administration requesting that all claimants be given their choice of a physician to perform any necessary examinations. VISTA volunteer Bob Runowski stated that a special BLA Meeting with Beckley Social Security representatives earlier Thursday, the answers gven were by the evasive representatives and "They did not give us enough information. They would not give us concrete answers." Daniel urged persons to file their black lung claims before July 2--the new deadline when claims will revert to state Workmen's Compensation rules instead of the more liberal ederal amendments. She has also appeared in several West Virginia Ballet Festivals, receiving an excellent raring. She performed two 3'ears with the Hetzer Theatrical Production of "Aqua Follies" in Hinton and danced with the Beckley Curtain Callers in "Damn Yankees." Augustine also pointed out that the young dancer has appeared professionally with the Rose Dancers throughout the tri-state area. The Rose Dancers are under the direction of Jerry Rose, who is also resident choreographer for the drama association. When the North Carolina Ballet Theatre was in Beckley recently Miss Akers worked on their technical crew. She also represented Raleigh County in America's Junior Miss pageant.
