The program teaches boatbuilding, rowing and sailing and environmental science. Through these skills, the program aims to empower young people facing severe economic, educational and social conditions and give them the self-confidence they need to reach their goals.

The fundraising event, called Rocking Manhattan, has been a tradition for the people of Team Manto over the past five years. "It went incredibly well," trustee of the organization and rowing captain of Team Manto, Peter Wright, said. "The great news is that we raised over $260,000 as a whole." Mr. Wright's daughter, Amanda, also captained Team Manto. Of the 10 teams, Team Manto was the only one from New Jersey the others all hailing from New York.

Members of the team include Matt Aiello, of Brielle, Emily Hackett, of Neptune, Sara and Laurie Foster, of Mantoloking, Henry and Barbara Colie, also of Mantoloking, and Pat Koar, of Allen-hurst. In a new change this year, the rowers utilized whale-boats recently commissioned for the restoration of the Mystic Seaport Museum's whaleship, Charles W. Morgan. Each boat holds five rowers, an optional alternate and a coxswain. A Rocking the Boat alumnus was required to drive each boat.

The minimum required fundraising pledge was $1,000 per rower ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION MEETING Date: Tuesday, Oct. 14 Time: 5 6 p.m. Location: Mantoloking Yacht Club, 1224 Bay Mantoloking COURTESY OF PETER WRIGHT Team Manto rowed 30 miles around Manhattan for the 6th consecutive year to support Rocking the Boat, a nonprofit organization benefiting youth in Bronx, New York. The primary focus of the event, however, was on raising money for the children. "We know that even though this is sort of a semi-dramatic, one day event, the real importance of the event is the ongoing support of the kids in the South Bronx that would not really have as many opportunities if it wasn't for these programs," Mr. Wright said.

Donations to support Rocking the Boat are still being accepted and can be made on the organization's website, rockingtheboat.org. Jessica Fasano covers Mantoloking for The Ocean Star. "It took us longer than usual because we had to wait for some ocean liner departures," Mr. Wright said. At the end of their journey there was an afterparty aboard the Arrabella yacht for the rowers and their supporters. Michael Forten-baugh, founder and Commodore of the Manhattan Yacht Club, donated the yacht for the party. The party was attended by about 225 people.
