"But there are so many guys that are tough out there." The win, he added, helped with his team's morale, and may have dampened the hopes of others. "It must have disheartened some other teams because we didn't test there," Moore said. "I think a lot of teams look at that (win) and think that means we're going to be tough at all the ovals." finishing third or fourth is better than going for the win and wrecking.

"I think a lot of that just comes from experience," said Moore, a native of New Westminster, British Columbia. During the offseason, Moore and his team spent their time testing on road courses, where roughly 50 of the FedEx Series events are staged. He has done well on the ovals the Miami event is one example but needed to focus on the road courses, where handling and driver skills are more important than flat-out speed. Moore broke into the CART series in 1996 after dominating the 1995 Indy Lights division, a feeder system of sorts for big-league open wheel racing. On his way to winning the 1995 Lights title, Moore won 10 of 12 races. However, the transition to the FedEx Series was not easy. "I didn't do as well as I wanted," he said.

"I had a lot of youthful exuberance. I made some of the races very, very exciting. I'm not saying that's a good thing." After discussions with the team's engineer and his father, Ric, Moore has learned to tone down his win-at-all-costs approach.
