The picture on the left shows a furnace, not yet connected to the filter system. It emits a heavy smoke, full of iron oxide, a red dust. In the picture on the right, one melting furnace is already operating through the new system, which conveys the smoke directly from the furnace to the filter unit outside, where the iron oxide il removed.

(Register Eckler) FARRELL-CHEEK INSTALLS $100,000 DEVICE No More East End Dust Blanket BY RITA TESSMANN REGISTER STAFF WRITER Red dust will no longer blanket Sandusky's east end Farrell-Oheek Steel Company is installing a $100,000 air pollution control system to end the problem. THE IRON OXIDE FALLOUT, which has plagued that end of the city, was emitted from the company's three electric melting furnaces, 11 GOTTA LUCKY generating a lot of smoke and fume. There is no city ordinance to enforce such pollution control, 'so Farrell-bheek's contribution toward clearing the city's air, is being done without any legal pressure. They can expect no dollars and cemts profit from their investment, an official said. INSTALLATION of the new furnace fume control system is now 95 percent complete, according to Gene Stuckey, executive vice-president of Farrell-Cbeek.

One of the company's three furnaces is already operating through the fume control system and the other two will be connected to it within a month, said Don Doty, director of capital improvements. Red smog no longer comes from the furnace already 1962 PENNY WITH COUPON GETS YOU A MCDONALD'S HAMBURGER TWO DAYS ONLY Saturday and Sunday, November 6th and 7th Lucky you fake your 1962 Penny and coupon to McDonald's good for one Pure Beef Hamburger served hot off the grill on toasted bun best hamburger in all the land. CITY MANAGER STUART GOSSER, who has been working with his Air Pollution Abatement Committee for about eight years to improve the situation, was pleased.

"I am very happy to acknowledge the progress they have made," Gosser said, referring to Farrell- Cheek. "They have been working on this a long time." Noting the cost of the installation, Gosser pointed out, "It's the type of investment that makes no returns to the company except in will." GILBERT CHEETHAM, chairman of the Air Pollution Abatement Committee, was also encouraged by the company's progress. Though his committee hasn't met for about three years, he said he has been working on the problem alone and has been in contact with Farrell- Cheek. "They've given me wonderful cooperation since this new company took over," Cheetham said. According to a Batell Institute survey, made about five years ago, 1,080 pounds of iron oxide was being emitted by the furnaces every 24 hours, Cheetham said.

It damages windows and paint on cars, he staid. HEALTH DEPARTMENT Sanitarian James Spencer previously ruled' that the Farrell-Cheek dust constitutes no menace to health. It was mainly a nuisance problem, said Cheetham, who lives at 1219 Second St. But he pointed out more recent reports on lung disease, apparently caused by air pollution in other cities. Farrell-Cheek Steel Company has been in operation since 1910.

The furnaces emitted their fumes directly into the building where the men worked and it floated out through the roof and open windows. THE NEW ELECTRIC melting furnace fume control system uses the direct shell evacuation method, which means it will remove fume emissions from within the furnace proper and convey them to a filter device located outside the building, Doty explained. The filter device captures the solids from the fumes, Doty siaid. These solids are mainly iron oxide.
