Wednesday. October 20,1976 The Times-Stindird, Eureka. California Lakers need power forward West may face long season ,17 INGLEWOOD, Calif. I Going on the results of last season. Jerry West faces a long rookiu coaching year.

Unless they land the power forward they need, the Los Lakers aren't expected to he a contender in the NBA's Pacific Division. In fact, it figures to be a struggle for them to mako the playoffs. The Portland Trail Blazers sold Sidney Wicks, Ihe former UCLA All-America, out of the division twice. He was the man the Lakers wanted and needed. "Sure, we hoped to get Sidney," admitted new Lakers' general manager Bill Sharman.

"But Portland didn't want to Rive him to us. That was pretty obvious." The Lakers then began talking to Julius Erving, the disgruntled New York superstar, and 33-year-old Paul Silas, who missed the Boston Celtics' exhibition season. A perfectionist as a player. West watched his Lnkers win three of seven preseason games and wasn't happy at what he saw. But he kept holding out hope that a trade would provide Kareem Ahdul- Jahbar some help up front.

"A lot of things can happen before now and Ihe start of the season." West said. But West, who spent vears in a Laker uniform, will go with 6-5 Cazzie Russell and Don Ford, a ti-9 second-year man. with Abdul-Jubbar against the Knicks in the Lakers' regular season opener at New York Thursday night. Kussell and Ford won't give the 7-2 superstar much help with rebounding West doesn't have much heip for Abdul-Jabbar on the bench, either. Karl Tatum, a rookie forward from Murquette and a second- round draft choice, looked uxceller 1 in the Lakers' exhibition games.

He's got quickness and can jump but he lacks size. The Lakers list him at ti-ti but he's only 6-l'-j. For Abdul-Jabbar's backup. West can flip a coin between C.J. Kupec, a ii-8 second-year man from Michigan, and 6-8 muscleman Kermit Washington.

In the backcourt. West will have ti-5 defensive specialist Don Chaney and seven-year veteran Lucius Allen, who has indicated he will play out his option this season. Little Mack Calvin, who spent seven years in the ABA, will come off the bench (o spell Allen and Chuncv. The lack of speed by the Laker guards may prove to be another shortcoming. Since West retired as a player, the Lakers have won only 70 regular season games in two seasons.
