Around town I Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Curtis ola couple married 50 years Sunday ed 18- of Mrs.

Morris (Catherine) Abts, 412 South Street, will observe her 91st birthday Sunday, May 28, and would enjoy cards from her friends. Mrs. Abts has made her home in Iola since 1912. May Gregory celebrated her 83rd birthday anniversary Wednesday. She and several friends had dinner together at a local restaurant and spent the afternoon in the home of Ollie Veteto.

Birthday cake, sherbet and coffee were served to Mrs. Gregory, Itah Walters, Stella Henry and Mrs. Veteto. A film, "Shiokari Pass, will be shown at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 28, at the First Assembly of God Church, 1020 East Carpenter.

The film, which was made in Japan with a Japanese cast and crew, is a true story based on the international best seller by Ayako Miura, Shiokari Pass. The Rev. John Chastain, pastor of the church, invites the public to attend this special showing. There is no admission charge. The Rev.

Clarence Johnson of Oklahoma City will be the guest speaker at the Ward Chapel AME Church at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 28. The Ward Chapel Singers will furnish the music for the service. The public is invited to attend. Mr.

and Mrs. Gerald Sigg, 507 East Spruce, have named their son Ryan Bret. He was born May 20 at Allen County Hospital and weighed 10 pounds, 4 ounces. His grandparents are Jeanette Britt, Dale E. Britt of Florida and Mr.

and Mrs. Victor H. Sigg. Leona Britt of Iola is the greatgrandmother. Daniel Burl Shinkle, grandson of Mr.

and Mrs. Woodrow Hudson, has been selected as a member of the Society of Distinguished American High School Students. He represents his church and the Thomas Carr Howe High School of Indianapolis, and will be featured in the 1978 edition of The Society of Distinguished American High School Students. His parents are the Rev. and Mrs.

Burl Shinkle of Indianapolis. Viola Gerdsen and her daughter, Betty Gibson of Montrose, who is here on vacation, have returned to Iola after visiting their daughter and sister, Mrs. Guy Clark and family in New Knoxville, Ohio, and Mrs. Gibsons daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs.

Roy Mahnesmith in St. Louis. This was the first time in 10 years that Mrs. Gibson and Mrs. Clark had seen each other.

Mary Jones is recovering from surgery at St. Francis Hospital, Box 1358, Room 306, Wichita, Kan. 67201. Paula Bird of St. Joseph, arrived here Wednesday to attend the Iola High School Commencement.

Her cousin, Gary Cleaver, was a member of the graduating class. Miss Bird was an overnight guest of her aunt, Mattie Christy, and traveled on to Sikeston, this morning where she will attend the graduation of her sister, Lisa Bird. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Perkins returned home Wednesday from a five-day trip.

Friday night they attended graduation exercises at McCain Auditorium in Manhattan when their granddaughter, Roxanna Davis, received a master of science degree in education from Kansas State University. Saturday morning they were present in Aheam Field House when granddaughter Martha Crouch was presented a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from KSU and gave the invocation. They attended the high school graduation at Bonner Springs Tuesday night when Rhonda Bell, fiancee of their grandson, Jim McKean, was graduated. The Iola High School Class of 1943 will have a dinner meeting at Harolds Sirloin of America at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 27.

All members and their families are welcome. Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Finkenbinder, Jeri Drake and Mrs. Clifford Steele attended commencement at the Wichita Vocational-Technical School in Wichita last night.

The Finken-binders daughter, Mary Finkenbinder, was graduated with a degree in institutional management. requests no gifts. Ted Curtis and Dorothea Dickerson were married May 28, 1928 at the home of the brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.

M. Dickerson, southwest of Colony with the Rev. E. N. Phillips officiating.

They lived on a farm east of Geneva until moving to Iola in 1967. They have five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Heckman, West take vows in St. Martin's Church Mr. and Mrs.

T. R. Curtis, 222 North Kentucky, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, May 28. They will behonored at a reception given by their daughters, Roberta McGie and Cheryl Curtis, at the First Baptist Church, 420 East Carpenter from 2 to 4 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

The couple June ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tholen, Moran, announce the engagement of their daughter, Paula Frances, to Marvin Leon Valentine, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Valentine, 435 North Elm.

Miss Tholen was graduated from Marmaton Valley High School. Her fiance, a graduate of Iola High School, is employed at Singer IGA. The couple plans a June 3 wedding at St. Johns Church. For her wedding the bride chose a gown of white silk organza and chapel train trimmed with appliqued lace and seed pearls. Her finger-tip veil of illusion was held by a Juliet cap. She carried a bouquet of silk baby mums and carnations in green and white interspersed with babys breath. Cindy Heckman attended her sister as maid of honor.

Kathy Collins of Yates Center was the bridesmaid They wore gowns of light green flocked cotton and carried green and white silk flowers. Jerry Sheibmeir, Piqua, a cousin of the groom, served as best man and Rob Collins, Yates Center, was groomsman. Steve Eisenbart and Bob Doeden, Yates Center, seated the guests. Music for the ceremony was provided by Carol Saulsberry. organist, and Tammy Bryant, vocalist, both of Yates Center.

The couple was honored at a reception in the Knights of Columbus Hall. The cake was served by Chris Ward of Clay Center and Cheryl Duncan, Seabrook, Texas, sisters of the bride. Cathy West, Yates Center, and Angie Eisenbart, Harrisonville, sisters of the bridegroom, served punch. Margo Derringer was in charge of the guest book; Joni Scheibmeir, Piqua, was at the gift table and Jeremy Heckman, Seabrook, Texas, and Scott Kress, Yates Center, nephews of the bride and groom, handed out rice bags. The bride was feted at a miscellaneous shower given by Ginny Westerman, Pat Neville, Joni Scheibmeier at the Knights of Columbus Hall on April 17.

AAUW would like to organize area college women Women college graduates who are interested in organizing a branch of the American Association of University Women are invited to attend a dinner meeting at Menegays Restaurant at 7 p.m. June 2. Alberta Byrum of Norton, division AAUW president, will be the guest speaker. Any woman who is a graduate of an accredited college or university is eligible for membership. Marvin Sander, rural Elsmore, was graduated from the dental assisting program at Flint Hills Area Vocational-Technical School, Emporia, May 24. She took the certification examination May 11. A cooperative church school planned in June The Wesley United Methodist, First Christian, First Presbyterian and Trinity United Methodist chiuches will have a cooperative vacation church school June 5 through June 9. Classes will be provided for children ages 3 years to those who have completed sixth grade. Enrollment will be in the educational building of the Presbyterian Church at the beginning of the school.

The sessions will run from 9 until 11:30 a.m. daily at the following locations: Wesley, nursery and grades five and six; Presbyterian, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and grades three and four; Christian Church, grades one and two. There was a good turn out for open house on Mothers Day. Our thanks to the Humboldt Fire Department, the ambulance crew and the police department for helping with our disaster drill. Things went smoothly, we learned much and feel we are better prepared if we should have a real disaster.

The family night of fun, the movie good and lots of popcorn and root beer were served. The highlight of the week was the chili and soup supper followed by country music by the Neosho Valley Buckaroos. During the week we hosted about 90 visitors and we all had a good time. There are many new faces around Pinecrest these days, both residents and staff.
