The Blizzard. St. Paul, De -ember 21th. Tho first genuine blizzard of the season has been raging iii Dakota all day a storm of snow as line as sand, driven by tierce wind, and a -comjianied by very low tem At Assinaboine the thermometer indicated 58 degrees below at 5 o'clock this afternoon. Huron reports all trains late, and those of the ji thwestern road abandoned entirely.

It has boen snowing at St. Paul almost all day, and at 10 p. m. is growing cold. Railroad men here do not anticipate any trouble on the Minnesota lines, but expect blockades in Dakota.

The snow is not general in this vicinity, but from Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado ind. Missouri come reports of heavy winds and bitter cold. The Times has telegraphic advices which indicate that there is terrible suffering in the western part of Kansas. Four people are reported dead in Clark county from the cold, while near Dighton, a woman uul two children are known to have osrished. There is creat suffering in at all times; also foreign money orders.

Barnuni Writes a Story. The opening chapters of a splendid story for the 3-011 tig, by the famous showman, T. Barnum. appears this week in the columns of The New York Family Story Paper. The story describes the adventures of an American boy, whom Mr.

Barnum calls "My Pluck' Boy Tom," and whom lie sent to India in search of wild, fierce, and rare animals to re pi ice thse destroyed by the disastrous fire at Bridgeport last month. The reader is thrilled by the hair-breath escapes of this dauntless American boy when capturing the fiercest a nd wildest animals ever seen in any traveling show. The New York Family Story Paper is for sale at all ews-stands. Christmas Festivities. The Carpenters Union will give an entertainment to-morrow evening at Williams' Hall.

The programme will be interesting and well rendered. There will be a Mask Carnival at the skating rink Saturday evening, in which a number of valuable prizes will be contested for. A highly interesting time is anticipated. The Christmas tree entertainment at the M. E.

Church Saturday evening will be an enjoyable place for the little folks. The Sunday school being one of the largest in the stato. The colored citizens will give a barrel supper at Music Hall, for the benefit of the New Hope Baptist Church. Many visiting brethrea are expected to be present and a big time is expected. The U.

B. Sunday School is waking extensive preparations for a grand entertainment Christmas eve. The church will be handsomely and tastily decorated. An enjoyable ti.ne will be had. The Chanute Cornet Band will give a grand ball at the opera house on Monday evening in which the management expect to excell anything in that line ever given in Chanute.

They have spared no pains to make it the bon ton affair of the season. The Sons of Veterans of Eariton will also give a ball and supper at Crane's Hall in Eariton on Wednesday evening, Dec. 28. A splendid tiino is anticipated. MARRIED.

Will Coulter has started a mustache and ou Saturday went out to hunt the festive rabbitt. He was glancing along the barrel of his "Avanger" when as he supposed a hair got between his vision and the game. Nothing daunted he pulled the trigger and knocked off a portion of his forefinger. The rabbit got away in safety. The quickest, payment of a life insurance policy yet recorded, was that of M.

S. Smith's, a member of Ottawa Lodge, No. 114, A. U. W.

He died on November 26th, and his widow received $2,000 in full of his policy, on December 5th just nine days. If you wrant to do something for your family, join the A. O. U. W.

There is an ugly rumor to the effect that a prominent citizen of North township, has been guilty of undue intimacy with his daughter. Last Saturday there was considerable talk of lynching, but better judgment prevailed, and the matter is now being investigated by the county attorney. If guilty the wretch should bo swiftly and severely punish ed, Yates Center News. Mr. M.

F. Haines went to Thaer on Monday to get a load of coal, and on account of the storm lie did not start to return until Tuesday afternoon. When about 4 miles from Chanute he stuck in a deep snow drift, and was obliged to abandon the load until Tuesday, when, with the assistance of Mr. Holly he was able to resume his journey. Mr, Haines is sintering somewhat irom nis expo sure.

Last night our city was given a great surprise. Ihe lame of the oody tiros. Male Quartette wa; known here, but we never heard of a man with a double voice; yet we heard one last night. Mr. M.

P. Woody (the old "Shady" of America) has a double voice. In his falsetto he is great, in his first bass ho is a great, and as a solo artist ana comedian he has no equal, ne is able to give a full programme all alone. His voice, is a fortune to him. New York Tribune.

Billy Anderson was arraigned before his honor. Judge Biles, Moudav, on a charge of using language calculated to disturb the peace, and C. J. Stravlo acting night police, appeared as prosecuting witness. Billy stood trial, and the court after hearing the evidence promptly dismissed him.

Then Billy filed complaint against the said Stravlo and his brother for tho same charge, and that of committing assault also. Strav lo plead guilty, and was fined by the court. He paid the flue, and is a sad but wiser man. Vol. 1.

No. 1. of theChanute Vidette, published by Jones Dewey, made its appearance this week. It is a six-page patent, wifli two pages of home print, and starts out with the it "will be published in the interest of the G. A.

and "advoeate the principals of Republicanism as set forth in the Republican National platform." have always understood that the G. A. R. was a non-partisan order, but this leaves us to infer that, in this community at any rate, the G. A.

R. will be used to further the ends of the g. o. p. Thank God! the country is again raved.

A wolf drive is being arranged east of the city, to include the territory in the following boundaries: The county line on the north, Big Creek on the east south to the Neosho River, and the river on the west to the north county line. The time probably be Thursday of next week, Dee. 29th. M. A.

Clover will be Marshal of the day, and will make necessary arrangements for the drive. Ech community, east, west, north and south, in this boundary will elect their captain and report to the marshal. Hand bills will probably be issued, giving further information and rules of hunting. Our citizens were somewhat surprised to learn on Wednesday morning, that Mr. C.

A. Dunakin, one of our oldest merchants had been compelled to make an assignment, Mr. Dunakin has been in business every since Chanute was started and while at one time somewhat "hard up financially" on account of slow collections, he had recovered, and things have been running smoothly. But the present hard times and failure of crops have made collections so slow, that he has been forced to suspend. Mr.

L. Rosenthal has been appointed assigneo and Mr. Zullar Justice is in charge of the store. We hope soon to see things stiaightened out and Mr. D.

Walter and May Truitt who have been attending school at Lawrence, ar home for the holidays. The first four months term of school will close to-morrow, and the children will take a week's holiday. In the case of Higgins vs Webb before Judge Stephens on Tuesday, the defendant (Webo) was acquitted. The Southern Kansas had a very severe wreck above Ottowa this morning, occasioned by the drifting snow. Mr.

Sam Deflinbauch and wife, and Mr. Deffienbauch's mother, Mrs. Jenkins hav gone to Wichita to spend the holidays. Marshal Prange has in his charge a lot of stolen property, consisting of dry goods, clothing, that is awaiting a claimant. J.

A. Wells, County Attorney Den-niion and County Clerk Lintbockcr, of Erie were in the city attending Higgins-Webb trial. The latest flirtation is with a broom. One of our social ladies who practiced it will give success to the Brownfield Brass Band. Remember if you take a newspaper from the post offiee whether you are a subscriber or not, the law hlds that you have to pay for it.

The Comptroller of tha Currency has approved the selection of the National Bank of Commerce of Kansas City as a reserva agent for the First National Bank of Chanute, Kans. Geo. Joknson, of the Chanuta Bank, while out buggy riding with a young lady on Wednesday evening, was caught in snow drift, and in attempting to releasa the buggy, his horsa ran away, severely injuring it. Rumor has it that Mr. S. C.

Brown one of our most prominent attorneys, and Miss Ell Heller, one of Chanute's most preposessing ladies nre to be united in the holy bonds of matrimony at the residence of the bride's parents this morning at 10 o'clock. Mr. C. D. Cross, the boiler repairer for the Southern Kansas has moved his family from Cherryvale and is occupying Mrs.

Lyen's house oa the west side. Mr. C. has baen in the employ of tha Southern Kanaas some nine years, and is the right man in the right place. Trains on tha Southern Kansas were sonewhat delayed by the heavy drift ing of snow on Tuesday.

The Independence train got in all right, but the Lamgton north bound train was abandoned near Oxford; and the Erie train did not arriye till 4:30. The south bound passenger was abandoned near Sdgerton. Freight train No. 81 started out for Longton, but when they got around the curve some 2 miles west, Conductor Dobson concluded that the now was too deep and they returned. 11 freight were than abandoned till yesterday morning.

The supply was exhausted during a previous cold sn ip in ihe first part of the month, and the situation is now deplorable. The suffering is augmented by the fact that food is almost as scarce as fuel.

Many of the inhabitants are settlers who located claims last summer and who are dependent on what the railroad bring in. The railroads are trying to do all in their power to relieve the distress, but they are handicapped by a scarcity of cars. They have not enough to sup ply the urgent demand for food and fuel, and widespread distress is inevitable unless the weather speedily mod erates. The Santa ia road has already announced that it will ship free all supplies which ma j' be collected for Clark county. From all reports the literary promi ses to be one of unusual interest. So mote it be. J. W. Baughman shipped several car loads of coal mine props last week, thereby giving employment to a num ber of men and teams.

Mr. Jas. Piatt, Sr. was in town last Saturday. His health lias bean poor for some time past, but we are glad to see the old gentleman around again.

and Mrs. Akers. They were upright people and Shaw, or any other town can ill afford to loose that class of citizens. A New York paper says "the kind of brains most in demand now, are brains which can lind a remedy for high taxes and low wages; whicn can conceive relief for underpaid workmen aud hungry wives and babies. It should have been "thieving finan cial policy" instead of thriving financial policy.

We would like to know where the type sticker gets authority for spelling it C-h-a-p-p-l-e. Webster doesn't spell it that way. We understand that Mrs. Stater has rented her farm on the creek and will visit her old iiome in Kentucky in a short time.

Sylvester Gilles, of Louisiana, Mis souri, is menus and relatives in this vicinity. He was among the early settlers here. There seems to be a large number of men hunting farms to rent. The rates most of the land owners hold their arms at, leave a small margin for the tenant. We think the owners of real estate should be willing to let renters share the profits of the farm with them.

It is human nature to want all that can be secured, but justice should have some consideration. FOUND A valice containing some insurance policies and other valuable papers and a book with the name of J. G. Wilson therein inscribed. It was found about one anil a half miles west of Chanute.
