On Monday night, "Caroline," in its regular 9 p.m. time slot, was mauled into 77th place by the night's new Nielsen queen, Fox "Ally McBeal." At No. 18, "Ally McBeal" was Fox' and Monday's highest-rated show, winning the time period in both total viewers and households for the first time. "Ally," with 15.4 million viewers (its second-best rating ever), also stomped Tom Selleck's CBS sitcom, "The Closer," into 70th place. The Sunday premiere of Fox' Damon Wayans sitcom, "Damon" (airing after a 19th-ranked "Simpsons" original), finished 30th, while the debut of NBC's "For Your Love" ranked 40th. CBS Sports' coverage of Duke vs. Kentucky in the NCAA basketball tournament ranked 12th. Among the evening newscasts, Tom Brokaw's "NBC Nightly News," with 11 million viewers, won for the 20th time in the past 21 weeks.
