Television in 7968 There were heart transplants and moon shots, riots and confrontations, fitful nominating conventions, a hair's-breadth Presidential election, the sudden, agonizing killings '-of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy. We watched them all on television. It was a year for dreging the complexities of the race problem, with so many documentaries and special programs on the ghetto that mosfof us were finally scretly or openly sick and tired of the subject. It was also the year Negroes came to television entertainment full force, and Radio Logs for Today, Diahann Carroll's 1 i became the only authentic hit of the season. Soul music and country music finally found respectable niches in television.

"The Hartford project has proved that subscription TV (STV) can be a worthwhile supplement to television viewing," RKO president John B.

Poor said. "With the recent decision by the Federal Communications Commission allow nationwide expansion of STV, the major purposes of the test now have been fulfilled." The experiment was begun in 1962 over WHOT with 200 subscribers and grew to include 7,000 families by 1967. Poor saM the WHOT experiment prvided the bulk of the information on which fee FCC decision was based. WHOT said ft plans to extend its present 6oTnrnercial TV program through prkne evening hours which have been devoted to STV, providing a third ftdl-time commer-, rial TV outlet Hartford. RKO sad it canceSed STV because if the FCC bad approved continued operation in the area, it would require conversion of the present system to color and involve numerous technical problems.

"I Spy" and "Run for Your Life" finally wound up their distinguished careers and retired to rerun land. The Monkees and Batman also faded out, mostly unmourned. It was good news time for Rowan and Martin, heading up the indisputable ratings leader, the indefatigable "Laugh-In." It was bad news for Jonathan Winters and Jerry Lewis, who slipped disastrously in the numbers. Even worse news for Don Rickles and Phyliss Diller, who flopped noisily in weekly comedy shows. Other comics had a fine year: Gleason, Hope, Skelton, Lucy and Dino ran stronger than ever.

Viewers stuck with old shows in 1968. Most of the new shows had trouble gaining a foothold, and some, like "Blondie," "The Ugliest Girl in Town" and "Hawaii Five-O" got lost in the shuffleAndy Griffith left the tube, but his show did fine without him, "Mayber-ry RFD" holding the fans. Doris Day came to television; her squeaky-clean comedy style needed no taking in. The network movie hours began to scrape the bottom of the Hollywood barrel of old flicks; movie viewership fell off. "Television drama had some good moments, with "Hatful of Rain," "Secrets," "Of Mice and Men," "Elizabeth the Queen," "Present Laughter" and "The Admirable 4 CBS Playhouse came a terrible cropper late in the year, with the blundering inanities of "The People Next Door" and the amateurish posturing of "Saturday Adoption." Local stations got socially conscious, insisting on asking Bay Area parents where their children were, and asked us to keep good boys from going wrong by making it harder for them to steal cars.

Triplets came to "My Three Sons." Diana Rigg left "The Avengers" for movie, jobs. Dick Cavett made a hit in daytime TV, and signed with ABC for three hours a week in prime time. Merv Griffin contracted with CBS for a late-night show opposite Carson and Bishop in 1969. The Oscar program made its dullest showing yet, and the Emmy Awards were downright embarrassing. When Don Rickles cracked, "And the winner is who cares?" he was more right than funny.

Later, the television academy announced changes in the Emmy rules that will make the Emmy show even worse, if possible, and the controversy over that is still raging. It was the year television newscasters found themselves in real trouble Polls showed a majority of Americans blamed the newsmen, at least in part, for the violence in Chicago. For the first time, Cronkite, Brinkley and others found themselves defending their news coverage. Documentaries provided some of the best viewing, as usual. The three-part "Rise and Fall of Third Reich" was monumental television work.

"How Ldfe Begins," "The Trial Lawyer" and the Cousteau specials provided enthralling hours. "Jim Nabors announced he would leave "Gomer Pyle" for a variety show next season. Bill Cosby was signed for a series about a San Francisco schoolteacher, Bea Benaderet's death was blow to "Petticoat Junction." Elvis Presley took rating of the year. The era of UHF, for better or worse, came to the Bay Area, initiating four new stations: KBHK, Channel 44; KNEW, Channel 32; KEMO, Channel 20, and KUDO, Channel 38. it was a year of more bad news than good, more flops than successes.

A year of playing-it-safe and business-as-usual. We spent more for our television sets, and watched them less. Television was a little better, nd a little worse, very much the same, to i9. NET will be hooked up to 130 of its 148 affiliated public television stations five nights a week for two hours in prime time for a six-month period. The network service is made possible by grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Ford Foundation, and by reduced rates from Except for the Public Broadcast Laboratory on Sundays and on rare occasions of network connection, NET has distributed its programs through the mail on film and videotape. IN PUBLICATIONS Ciaarefre Ads to Be Gut by BBC LONDON (UPI) The British Broadcasting Corp. told cigarette manufacturers yesterday it would accept no more advertising from them for BBC publications as of July 1, 1969. The BBC carries no commercials on its radio or television programs, but publications like Radio Times and the Listener are ad-crammed Industry sources said the decision to cut cigarette advertising would cost the BBC a year.

No reason for the move was given in BBC letters to three leading cigarette manufacturers. The letters stressed, that the ban "applies only to tiga-rettes advertising space will continue to be available for tobacco products other than cigarettes."
