There wasn't much to say. Martin Luther King had been shot and killed. Cronkite said it, and ed it, and made the obvious comments. The apostle of nonviolence had died by violence. That was that.

There was no news to report. On the other channels, the other newscasters were doing the same. It was too early for newsfilm from Memphis, or interviews with civil rights leaders. There was nothing to do but Radio Logs for Today, Tomorrow repeat the sad news. There was no reason to stay tuned, but I did, and so did you, probably.

As I listened to i it occurred to me that he and the others were doing something important that had nothing to do with reporting the news. Frederick of the Federal Communica-tions Commission has recommended approval of an application of Bay Broadcasting Co. for a channel 38 television station in San Francisco.

The decision becomes final in 50 days ttnless there Is an appeal or the commission initiates a review. SOLD ONLY tion, a way oirystalizing our feelings, and a sense of sharing in an important event.

Once we heard Dr. King was dead, there was nothing more to learn. But we stayed tuned, because what had happened was too important to turn off and forget. In another era, we might have gone down to the general store or the town meeting hall to talk over what had happened. Now we get our sense of community, what little we have, from television.

Later on came the special reports, put together by the networks with remarkable speed. There were statements by aides of Dr. King, civil rights leaders, government leaders. There were films of King speaking, recaps of his career. Still there wasn't much to say.

There was no way to make sense of a senseless happening. But the reiterations and the discussions and the expressions of feeling brought home the reality of what had happened and gave us a sense of involvement in it. Living as separately as we do these days, maybe we need to hear a familiar television voice to be sure how we feel about things. Be that as it may, Chet Huntley helped to sum it up: "This country and every person in it suffered a terrible loss tonight Dr. Martin Luther King is victim of the violence he preached against and eschewed.

This stirring and gifted voice of restraint is now silenced, and we will find it difficult to argue convincingly in behalf of moderation. That is tragedy of it. Restraint, gentleness, charity virtues we so desperately need have had a dark day." The next day the newspapers would bring the story in more detail, with interpretations and second, thoughts. In the meantime, the lonely crowd needed company, and television supplied it. The most memorable ten minutes on television last night enclosed Dick Van Dyke's superb "ages of man" routine, in which he suggests the stages in the life process by a series of public speeches as a little boy, as a fiery young radical, a budding executive, a hidebound conservative and finally the infancy of an old man.

Funny, and very poignant Van Dyke is the most pleasant man in the Western Hemisphere, and his special was easy to take. The second best item in the show was a marvelous film done by three Disney employes in their spare time a motorcycle drama with invisible motorcycles. It was bright of Van Dyke to use it; There are hundreds of wonderful short films, but somehow they seldom find their way to television. I liked Mel Belli'4 talk show in its premiere on Channel 20 last night. After the recent proliferation of witless gab shows full of trumped-up controversy and enforced hostility, it was a pleasure to see and bear an intelligent discussion by knowledgeable, unhysteri-cal people.

The topic was civil rights. The guests were perti-, nent: Dick Gregory, Negro psychiatrist Price Cobbs, Cecil Poole, S.F. Mayor Jot Alioto, Oakland Police Chief Gain, a criminologist, a reporter, and other alert mentalities. The format waseasy and interesting, some guests left early, others dropped in late. Belli was casual and unobstrusive, jogging the conversation only ben it needed joggiS- asked a few sensible questions, shut up and listened.

Next week's topic is Vietnam; I recommend tuning it in. As a gesture of respect and mourning for Martin Luther King, the Motion Picture Academy has cancelled tonight's session, of the Oscar awards, moved the program to Wednesday evening. At last word, Wayne Newton's special will still be seen at 9 tonight, though Newton wanted the holdover audience from the awards show.
