Page 12 Thursday, Jan. 29,1976 Times Standard 'Rich Man, Poor Man' Soaper may make it big A A A UPI TV Writer LOS ANGELES I "Rich Man, Poor Man" may be the best thing to hit television since "Peyton Place," which puts it far above much of the present TV schedule. ABC's 12-part serialization of the Irwin Shaw novel bows in Feb. 1 and 2, 9-11 p.m., Kastern time, with a pair of two-hour episodes of what will be a Impart mini-series. The story line concerns brothers Rudy and Tom Jordache, played by Peter Strauss and Nick Nolle, who are in their late teens on VE- Day in 1945, living at home in a small town in the Hudson River valley.

Rudy is respectful, ambitious, idealistic, and plays "Stardust" on his horn. Tom, a a naturally athletic, also is wild, irreverent and often cruel. Edward Asner, lovable Lou Grant on the Mary Tyler Moore show, proves stunningly effective as Axel Jordache, the boys' father -a bitter, brutal man with a mustache and German accent, who works exhaustingly in his bakery and behaves with the cruelty of guilt toward his pathetic and frigid wife, played by Dorothy McGuire. Susan Blakely plays Julie Prescott, Rudy's high school sweetheart in the opening episode, who wants to escape their small town to find success as an actress in New York. She takes up with rich Teddy Boylan, played by a dissolute Robert Reed, who owns the factory which employs her mother, played by i i a Grahame.

The first episode works hard to establish its era, 1945, with Rudy playing Julie dancing the Lindy in bobby sox, the local movie house playing "Wake Island" and Tom kidding about Randolph Scott and "Gung Ho," one of Scott's World War II films. After the first two "Rich Man, Poor Man" will cover 20 years in its next 10 shows, air but the last to be shown Monday nights, 10-11 p.m., Eastern time. On Monday, March 22, "Rich Man, Poor Man" will wind up with a final two-hour episode. The spotlight will he on the different paths the brothers take, one to riches and one toward disaster. Along the way part of the fun promises to be the all-star list of guests to appear, including Steve Allen, Van Johnson, George Maharls, Roy Mllland and Craig Man" stas out it would be great fun throughout, with some dandy acting and a tangled web of characters and motivation that makes for plot and gives the episodes holding power.

It might earn higher marks if it didn't dip into soap opera with a few outrageously i a Example: Rudy tells Julie he loves her while she is sitting in a moving bus and he is kneeling in the aisle among the standees. And she answers, "This is my stop." The 10 top-rated network television programs for the week ending Jan. 25, according to the A.C.
