So are a lot of other peo- wantedaboy. pie. it Crown For "Joe," Tanya Denise Dennis, has grown into a sleek and talented 20-year-old miss who now wears the crown of "Miss Oakland." She was judged the fairest of Oakland's fair last week and will represent the city in" the Miss California contest in Santa Cruz June 22.

She stands a good chance. Miss Oakland 1968 variety is not only very easy on the eyes, she is talented, and beauty crowns are no stranger to her. She currently is the Maid of Berkeley, a title she will relinquish May 18. Tanya also was -4', V- es dancing at Grove Recreation Center near her bomeT Tanya's mother, a San Pablo school teacher, and father, a cement contractor, are both proud of their beautiful daughter. Her grandmother, Mrs.

Birda Shehee of Los Angeles, and boyfriend engaged to be Claremont Men's College student Sherman Hill, both came here for the Miss Oakland pageant. But the pageant was judged past bedtime for the youngest -beauty of the family. Nicole Wong, seven months, is biding time until Miss' Oakland 1988 is in the making. She has an aunt who can give her all the tips. Bay Area Miss Bronze in 1966, Berkeley United Crusade's Miss Fair Sharer and first runner-up in the Miss San Francisco Pageant last year.

She's also had some help from her older sister, Mrs. Brenda Wong, who was Miss Bronze in 1959 and runner up to Miss San Francisco in 1960. Tanya, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.

F. Dennis of 1542 Ty-Lr Berkeley, is a dramatics art student at Merritt College, and expects to enter University of California at Los Angeles next year for further study for a theatrical career. Tanya already is well into her career. She has her own troupe, the Nairobi Dancers, who perform authentic African dances. Many of the dances were learned from African exchange students, others from noted instructor Ruth Beck-ford.

The troupe often performs at schools, and toured the Berkeley Elementary Schools during Negro History and Brotherhood Week. The talented Miss Dennis can also sing in several languages, among them Yiddish, Ibo (a central African tongue), a 1 1 i and Congolese, and uses this talent in her performances.
