Earlier about 200 demon- strators marched in a circular line at 13th and Broadway, blocking the intersection in all four directions. They dragged steel suppdrt piers into the street, threw garbage cans and metal newstands into the intersection and paraded around the heap of rubble. Soft drink bottles taken from a truck were smashed on the street. A number of stink bombs were thrown.

They were finally driven away by a phalanx of 20 Oakland police but moved to 13th and Washington where they commandeered a pickup truck, parked it broadside and let the air out of the tires. Then the crowd swept to 11th and Washington, dumping garbage and boulders into the street A force of 80 California Highway Patrol officers, marching 22 abreast, forced the group up Washington to an area in front of the City Hall and then surrounded them. at Jefferson and 13th Streets, demonstrators let the air out of a federal worn under the hood. At 15th and Jefferson, demonstrators intercepted a third car and began rocking it until the driver opened the door and flPd. Then the car was placed across the intersection.

One monitor shouted: "We'll block every intersection In town.1' Police herded demonstrate s- away from the- four blocks immediately surrounding the center and established one police line across San Pa blo Avenue at 21st St. There the police held fast, while the crowd, in holiday mood, chanted and jeered, not knowing that the inductees' buses were about to arrive. At 15th and Grove Streets, boards were torn from nearby structures and hurled at the police who made several arrests. At 17th and Jefferson streets, cars crashed through the demonstrators' barricades. Then the first two of the five buses inched up San Pablo Avenue, escorted by more than 50 police officers on foot.

A few moments later three more buses came, this time at a 35 mile an hour clip, in the middle of a fleet of police motorcycles. The buses rolled the wrong way down one way Clay Street to the center and the demonstration was nearly over. A few moments later a Navy bus arrived, and like the others, unloaded without incident. When picket leaders declared that the demonstration was over, the protesters moved out, leaving behind a force of police officers which had at one time totaled 1,200 with 800 more held in reserve. National Guard officers were on hand as observers although the guard was not called out jGov JRonald Reagan's office was in continuous contact with the Oakland command center all during the demonstration.
