Dean Dies Aide Dies Lucy Sprague Mitchell, Uni- 89, the first woman on the versity of California faculty at Berkeley and the campus' first dean of women, died Sunday at a Palo Alto rest home. A native Chicago and 1900 gradute of Radcliffe College, she began a distinguished career in education in 1903 when she came to Berkeley. She was named dean of women in 1908, the first woman in such a post west of the Rockies. After marriage to Dr. Wesley Clair Mitchell, an economist, she began work in New York City and in 1916 founded the Bank Street College of Education, to train teachers.

She served as a consultant to many private and public schools, including those of New York City. Mrs. Mitchell was the author of some 20 books, many of them children's books. She was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree in 1958 by Clark Kerr, then president of U.C. He hailed her as "one of our greatest professors of half a century Survivors include three sons: John M.

Mitchell of Stamford, Sprague Mitchell of Greenwich, and Arnold Mitchell of Palo Alto; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. R. Veale, Contra Costa County Sheriff for 40 years, died today in his sleep at his home here. Mr. Veale had just returned to his residence following treatment at Merritt Hospital, Oakland, for a heart ailment. A graduate from the U.S.

Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1918, he obtained his law degree at Stanford University in 1922 and practiced law in Antioch from 1923 to 1937, and later in Sierra County and Martinez. Mr. Veale became head of the criminal department in the office of Dist. Atty. Francis M.

Collins and continued in that position under Dist. Atty. John A. Nejedly. His father served as sheriff from 1894 to 1934 and as county tax collector until his death in 1937.

Mr. Veale was born on the Veale tract near Knightsen in east Contra Costa County and was graduated from Alhambra High School in Martinez. He served in the Navy during World War joining as an enlisted man and rising to a commissioned officer. Mr. Veale, a brother-in-law of Appellate Court Justice A.

F. Bray of Martinez, leaves his widow, Mary, 96 Stone Road, Bethel Island; two sisters, Mrs. Bray and Mrs. McMahon, both of Martinez; a brother, Robert Howard Veale, of Sayreville, N.Y., a retired offical of Du Pont Company; a daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Burbank, Oakland, whose husband is on the legal staff of the U.S.

Attorney General Office in San Francisco, and a nephew, Martinez attorney A. Frank Bray, and five grandchildren. Services are pending. Nuclear Scientists Meet in Poland WARSAW (UPI) More than 140 nuclear scientists, including 14 Nobel Prize winners, gathered today for a symposium on the future of atomic science. The symposium is part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the birth of Marie Curie, discoverer of radium.
