Smith said today he will urge the Alameda County Mayors Conference to join a threecounty campaign to obtain state funds for the Bay Area 5.8 6.1 Rapid Transit District (BART). chairman of the conference committee on rapid transit, said he believes Alameda County mayors should endorse the goals drafted at a recent meeting in San Francisco. The San Francisco meeting was attended by city and county officials from San Francisco, Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The leaders agreed to bury their differences and work together on a program to get BART state aid. Three bills which would have aided rapid transit died at this year's session of the legislature.

BART needs about $120 million to finish the 75 miles of track promised voters in 1962, but expects some from the Federal Government. Smith said he will make the recommendation next Wednesday when top BART Low High High Low Point, San Francisco. He said he believes BART's lobbying efforts at the last session of the legislature were uncoordinated. it will take unified action by local leaders to get the money from the legislature Smith said, because "they've (BART) worn out their welcome" in Sacramento.

Smith said he feels confident BART will get the money if local leaders go to bat for the district' when the legislature convenes in January. At the San Francisco meeting, called by Mayor John F. Shelley, area leaders agreed to form a committee of 12 to work with lawmakers on the BART problem. Each county would have four members on the committee two appointed by the board of supervisors, two by the mayors conference..
