Tuesday, October 13, 1992 ELKO DAILY FREE PRESS, Elko, Nevada 5 Gaming titan Steve Wynn moves to buy Dunes Hotel 'to- jr. new place to play," one employee said. The only other course left on the Strip would be at the Desert Inn Hotel, played mainly by Desert Inn guests because of the green fees for non guests, who pay $150 a round compared to $75125 for guests. Green fees on the Dunes' par-72 course range from $60 to $70 for hotel guests, $80 to $90 for out-of-towners who arent guests, and $30 to $50 for locals. If the Dunes course goes, unless they play the Desert Inn, visitors to Strip hotels will have to drive or be bused miles away to play golf.

"People will have to go to the Sahara (golf course on Desert Inn Road near Maryland ParkwayX or places like the Legacy (course in Henderson)," a Dunes course employee told the Review-Journal. "It's here on the Strip," said another employee of the course. "They are here because it's here on the Strip." I'm so excited! country of origin, Indonesia. Wynn, who is chairman of Mirage Resorts and Henry Gluck, chairman of Caesars World are talking about building a transit system to link Wynn's Treasure Island hotel-casino project and The Mirage with neighboring Caesars and possibly with the nearby Dunes Hotel. Wynn, meanwhile, has his eyes on the Dunes Hotel's Emerald Green lfrhole championship golf course for a small theme park.

The course, open since 1964, is a secret to many Las Vegas residents but popular with visiting celebrities and a few knowledgeable tourists and locals. Wynn announced last week he had agreed to buy the Dunes for a reported $75 million and plans to develop the 161.9-acre hotel and country club with five or six complexes of 500 to 600 rooms each. A section may be used to build a small theme park, he said. Wynn has further proposed that The Mirage and Caesars link up in mutual promotions of boxing matches scheduled by the resorts. Gluck, through a spokesman, declined to talk about Wynn's offer.

"He thinks it's not appropriate to comment about his discussions with Mr. Wynn," Jack Leone told the Las Vegas Review-Journal from Caesars World headquarters in Los Angeles. Mirage spokesman Alan Feldman said it's possible the monorail already planned to run from the rear of Treasure Island to The Mirage's front entrance could be extended next door to Caesars. The system eventually could include the Dunes property, he said. The Treasure Island project is scheduled to be completed in November 1993.

Wynn said he expects to develop the Dunes property into a major resort with five or six theme hotel complexes, each with 500 to 600 guest rooms. The Mirage and Caesars each attract about 10 million people a year, according to figures provided by both hotels. Those numbers eclipse the 65,000 golfers who play each year at the Dunes' Emerald Green links, but it is second in Las Vegas to the approximately 110,000 people who play the Las Vegas Municipal Golf Course annually, course workers said.
