C4 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2012 ARTS LIFE EDMONTON JOURNAL edmontonjournal.com MiiiiHiiiiiiiitiiiiiimMiiiimiiiiHiiiMiiiiiiimiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiiH MUSIC Oil City Roadhouse closes unexpectedly Major concert announcement has social media buzzing sell the two clubs to concentrate on the company's smaller, more financially stable pubs such as The Pint and The Public House. A BEATLE IN EDMONTON? If news of Oil City's closure isn't enough to keep social media sites abuzz, there's word of "a major historical concert event scheduled for Rexall Place," according to an email sent by Live Nation. The concert will be revealed at 11 a.m. on Friday during a news conference at Rexall Place with Mayor Stephen Mandel. Whowhat could it be? Paul McCartney, Rolling Stones, Radiohead and Jesus are some of the theories thrown about on Twitter.

My colleague at the Vancouver Sun, Francois Marchand, says he received a similar email and Songkick.com is listing a Paul McCartney gig for Nov. 25 at B.C. Place in the coastal city. (Keep in mind, Song-kick is the same site that said Skrillex's Full Flex Express was going to be held in Edson, not Edmonton, after politicians from St. Albert turned the tour down.) McCartney has never played Edmonton on his own or with Wings or The Beatles so he would fulfil both the "major" and "historical" parts of the concert announcement.

"Also a bit confused that Mike would decide to fold the company when the bar was finally on its upswing and looking to have a very busy September." Stang has yet to respond to the Journal's requests for an interview. Castro estimates 40 people worked part time at Oil City and another 40 worked at Vinyl. He hopes the building will be reopened as another club.

"I can't imagine the venue not being taken by any of the hospitality groups in the city," he writes. "The combined capacity is about 1,600 seats in the middle of downtown Edmonton next to parking, the new (Jasper) Avenue upgrade, schools and relatively close to the future arena. It would be a huge disappointment if this building just got demolished to make room for a gravel parking lot." While Oil City is credited as helpingto revitalize downtown Edmonton when it opened in 2007, the club was the subject of many complaints about noise, litter and violence. Two months after a brawl outside the bar in 2008, the Alberta government instituted a minimum on drink prices. The country-themed room, located in the old Saveco building between 107th and 108th Streets, was one of the most notorious venues in downtown Edmonton. A second club in the same building, Vinyl Retro Lounge, has also closed. Both were owned by Mike Stang, who bought the spots from the Oil City Hospitality Group in April. Stang emailed some of his staff members about the closures on Wednesday afternoon. "The operations have ceased and the premises have been surrendered to the landlord," Stang writes.

"Financially, these companies were unable to operate or continue and will cease to exist." Hector Castro, who worked as one of Oil City's assistant managers, was "taken aback" by the decision.
