Under the circumstances, he told Franks didn't think he'd be able to earn his salary or do a creditable job for the club. Shaw was one of the last major leaguers to sign his 1963 contract on April 4 and even after he agreed to terms, the Giants didn't give him too much work as a starter. He was 1-4 with them when they let him go and te had the feeling they probably would try to rut him pretty close to the full 25 per cent next year had he remained with San me real well, though, they know I'm not flakey. Not in the accepted anyway." 1 Shaw, a forgotten figure with the Giants earlier this season, has a fine 2.91 earned run average since joining the Mets and a 4-0 record with them. He is 5-4 on the season.

Nothing has made him as happy as finishing three of the four garnet he started for the Mets, including his last one which he pitched in 95 degree heat and beat the Cubs, 9-3, last Saturday. "What bothered me was that they had the feeling I couldn't go nine anymore," says Shaw. By "they," means the Giants. plus. Value te wianer, $4S; second.

The 17-year old apprentice jockey booted home two winners with a pair of heady rides on yesterday's card nere. The youngster, born and raised in Richmond, scored the initial riding triumph of his brief career aboard Chief's Watch in the sixth race. Cariglio made it two for two for his afternoon's work when he captured the ninth race on Aspirin. Both winners were trained by Jack Fumano, who holds the boy's contract. Cariglio had his work cut out to score his first lifetime victory with Chiefs Watch, who he had out of the pace in the six-furlong sixth race.

He moved to the front at the top of the stretch and then was challenged by Nic's Lemon, with the fair circuit's leading booter, Charles Tohill, aboard. When Nic's Lemon moved up to vie for the lead approaching the wire, Cariglio went to his whip like a veteran and laid a couple of left hand lashes cn Chief's Watch. The latter responded to gain the victory. His second victory was scored with Aspirin, a three-year old filly making her first trip to the races. Cariglio had Aspirin cut of the gate quickly and went head and head with Power Cruiser for the lead.

When they hit the turn Mike dropped back with his charge and waited until the top of the lane ta make another bid. Aspirin moved at the leader, took command and under a hus tling ride got to the wire iirst in the good time of 1.11 for the six furlongs. Aspirin paid while Chief's Watch returned a $4.40 mutuel. Pun (1600 Holiday Gem Double Indian Tit Red Mr. Fir Iyt Martin IISKing Fling Johnny Demton NEW YORK (LTD Bob, Shaw celebrates his 33rd birthday todaj and if they told him to make a wish he wouldn't even bother because it already has come true as far as he's concerned. What Shaw originally wished was that the league-leading San Francisco Giants would deal him to another club. Not only did he wish it, he even asked them if they would. Tbey obliged him on June 10, when they wrapped him in a nice neat package, tied it with a bright red and delivered it over to the New York Mets for $50,000 on the barrel-head.

Now any ball player sent from a potential pennant winner to a ninth-place club normally might be expected to grumble. Not Shaw, though. "This is exactly what I wanted," he said. 'T mtickled to death to be with the Mets. Mon: etarilv I'll come out ahead any even if the Giants do get into the World Series." Shaw has been pitching in the majors 10 years and during that time he has earned the renuta tion of alwavs knowing what he's doing whenever he's on the mound and for being a bit flakey whenever he's off it.

"I can see why they consider me flakey," owns up the wavy-haired right-hander who has startled everybody in the National League by winning four in a row for the Mets since being handed over by the Giants. off, I've always been sort of a bug on watching my physical condition and anyone who does that to an extreme is thought to be unusual. That stiff left knee and upright body contribute to this poor delivery, but forcing for extra speed is the fault behind it all. Lofting the ball with too much speed prevents the ball from gripping the surface and developing rolling action. Such a ball will collect a few strikes but not as many as ball that is allowed to begin rolling earlier and books into the pocket with lots of stuff on it. Actually, the only thing a lofted ball will get you is a dirty look from the manager. BOWLINGS BASIC FUNDAMENTALS IN A NUTSHELL!
